It had seemed like they had given up on Daisuki. Apparently it was due to this. Hopefully this manages to take off.

This is Daisuki by another name, and in all the time it existed it was a tremendous underachiever. Government funding aside, I'll have confidence in this when it gives me a reason to have some. The fact they are slowly rolling it out through Spring 2015 after Daisuki has been treading water all along is not a good start. But, I guess one can hope.

I assume you guys meant to put ADK here, as Aniplex was only one of the investors/supporting companies on the site, while ADK was the one established and pushed the website out. Though, honestly, given how Aniplex focus the site has became, I suppose that wouldn't be entirely wrong. Either way, it's disappointing what Daisuki ended up becoming in the end. Still really upset we never really saw anything from the surveys they put out in the beginning. I think Daisuki could've really stood out on it's own if it had a stronger catalog and exclusives... |

So what's to stop this new service from exclusively streaming some titles instead of giving their direct competition in CrunchyRoll the same material? If they don't go exclusive, they'll need to offer a better experience, there's really no point in having another streaming site if it's inferior or does nothing unique.

And so Japan has apparently learned nothing from Daisuki's failure with the solution being to keep throwing money at it until it works.
I mean I wish them the best and all but it doesn't really seem like they're doing anything differently here. |

Unless I'm mistaken ChibiGoku this is all about a stronger catalog - it sounds like they're forming a new company that will incorporate more partners and basically just rolling all the existing Daisuki infrastructure and deals into it to get it off the ground quickly. Not that I necessarily expect it to do any better unless it has some sort of competitive advantage over other sites (exclusive access to some series perhaps, at least in some territories).

I will be interested to see how this $9.1 million will manifest itself, but i'm not going to hold my breath for anything groundbreaking. Gov't funded programs are always horrendously inefficient and if Daisuki is any indicator, I don't have much hope for it. I don't think I've used Daisuki since they pulled their Lupin episodes. But I will say this, their IOS app is gorgeous. Let me put it to the forum readers, what would you all do to make Daisuki/ACJ succesful aka profitable? It seems like their current plan of attack is simply existing and hoping people buy figures from them. I don't buy figures, so I'm not sure if they are a big player in the figure market or what. Maybe someone who knows can tell me.

I don't really care much if they have exclusive titles or not. Give me a better viewing experience and I'll make use of it. Crunchyroll's queue system to keep track of what I've watched and when new episodes come out of shows I'm watching is a killer feature and the one thing most of the other sites seem to be missing (Funimation tried, but their queue is still sorta only half there).
Playback on multiple devices that remembers where you left off if you switch devices mid-episode is another killer feature (CR has that one, too). |

Will this be available for viewing in Japan?
I live in Tokyo and can't use CR because Japan is geoblocked, and I can't use Japanese streaming services because either or both 1) you have to have a Japanese credit card (like d-Anime store or Amazon Video) or 2) nothing's subbed (Hulu Japan, and also the above two services). I buy the DVDs of shows I watch, because I generally like them enough to want to support them, but I still download fansubs because there's otherwise no way for me to watch subbed versions of stuff. It's not a lack of money, it's a lack of availability. So, assuming that this service might eventually have everything I want to watch...any chance of allowing people in Japan to watch subbed stuff? It's ridiculous that this is still an issue. |

That's the thing. If it is anything remotely like the current Daisuke, it is not going to be nearly as good as most other streaming sites. I love CR for their queue, multiple device use, video quality, and general ease of use all across the board. Having Funimation going for exclusivity on their titles is already annoying enough(Let's face it, their Elite service sucks... actually, their whole site does. It's clunky, awkward to navigate, and lacks a decent way to keep track of shows), but if Daisuke tries to do the same thing, they better up their game. Like I brought up before, their site is really not very good at all. It is probably worse than Funimation's, to be honest. I appreciate a good experience when I watch anime. Paying for a service should provide an experience equal to it's cost. The only one doing that right now is CR. And I doubt Daisuke(or this new service), can beat that. You know guys you can at least try to hide the fact that you're gaming the industry. Monopoly is ultimately just a game after all.
The thing is all the biggest highest budget and popular titles are pretty much owned by Bandai Namco and Aniplex these days anyway. If they wanted to they could really hold Crunchyroll hostage with this arrangement and cut out the middleman. I mean Bandai Namco pretty much already is, but imagine Crunchyroll losing exclusive rights to titles like SAO, Fate Stay Night, Fairy Tail, Naruto Shipuden, Gintama....the list goes on really. Pretty much all the companies listed their are powerhouses too. Sunrise and Toei alone could rival most publishers themselves on average with the number of popular licenses they have control over. Hell if Bandai Visual and Aniplex were ever to somehow end up merging that's pretty much game over right there for the rest of the industry. They're practically in bed with each other already even though they put up the front of being in competition. I mean what's up with Bandai Namco just casually handing what is supposed to be it's major competition the idolMASTER license. That almost seems like a dowry in a way lol. |

Exclusive content may not be as big of a factor on today's 'innernets. If they can pair that with easy user interface, uniquely generated content, or ways to link anime communities with these companies, I might give it a try. It is nice that they are attempting to acknowledge international interest in the anime market, but so far, the connection to fans outside Japan does not seem completely commited. I think we are still kind of an afterthought, a way to outsource content for extra revenue increases. But maybe I am the disillusioned one. I love going to conventions, but it troubles me when I sense a slight unease or resevation to enter external markets from figureheads, industry anaylsts, or the creators themselves. Global integration and communication are still limited, even in an age of information, traditional and sometimes violatile cultural differences. That itself may never change, but the way I want to embrace anime makes me want to hold onto something that is more solid and wholehearted. I think I am disillusioned, perhaps idealistic, I guess. I am looking for more than streaming and merchandise, but a passionate reflection for the years I have poured into this hobby. I'll happily fork over the cash then.
