I read somewhere that Araragi's design is anime-original; apparently the LN artist, VOFAN(from Taiwan) said in an interview he vastly preferred drawing girls over guys, and never gave him an initial design. Can anyone confirm this?

Akio Watanabe created Araragi's design himself for the anime because he was never depicted in the LN illustrations.

The Monogatari source novels, unlike other light novels, don't have many illustrations in them (the cover, and maybe one more per book?). So it's no surprise that there's no design for Koyomi in the source.

I'm not sure if for the lack of illustrations that they count as light novels at all.

The paragraph of this review about the nature of the series, and how the characters lie, is incredibly well written, and well worded. I agree with that analysis, its one of the reasons I enjoy the series so much.

Despite the fact that Araragi and Mayoi are 2 of my favorite characters in the series, because they are so likeable, this arc is probably my least favorite of the second series. That is until the last episode, which was surprisingly well done.

As always, I'm looking forward to more Monogatari in the future!

If we look at it from the character development and interaction side, Shinobu Time has offered a big growth and depth to mainly Araragi Koyomi, who learns that some problems can't be outrun nor solved by throwing himself into the mix every time, and Oshino Shinobu, who comes to terms with the misunderstanding and her deceit of not clearing up that misunderstanding, as well as provide more backstory about her pre-Bakemonogatari form and the world she she roamed in. Hachikuji Mayoi also got much-needed character development, but not as much as the other 2 leads of this arc, taking into consideration future Monogatari installments, IMO.

While I do agree that Onimonogatari was the weakest of the second season, there was still a huge character development in this arc mainly for Koyomi and our loli vampire. Remember that this arc is mainly about Shinobu and not at all about Hachikuji. The second season in my perspective was to let the characters solve their own problems without the help of Koyomi as said by Senjougahara at the beginning of the season when she told Hanekawa that that Koyomi would do everything to help them even if they didn't call him for help. Also, the fact that Gaen Izuko told Hanekawa that only her can fix her own problem. Transition into Kabukimonogatari, Otorimonogatari, and Koimonogatari, Koyomi's interference just make the situation worse. So what's I think the second season was trying to accomplish is to teach the character of Araragi Koyomi a lesson is that he cannot do everything on his own and let the girls solve their problems themselves sometime. Onimonogatari established that with having his interference to be pointless with Hachikuji disappeared regardless at the end. This is actually pretty rare for a harem show to have since all of them just let the main guy to help with the girls and success every time so I think Monogatari Series got itself 1 point for doing this.

Same, this arc was probably my least favorite although I enjoyed it a lot. I feel hard pressed to chose a "least favorite". But if you know anything about the light novels, this arc in particular is probably the most important for the events later in the series.

Wow.

I'd pretty much given up on the Monogatari franchise --- I haven't yet watched Crunchyroll's stream of the five episode Suruga story that came out, I think, a year ago, for example --- and the Mayoi/Araragi interactions in this sequence is part of the reason.

But this review, with its detailing of the subtle visuals (and, of course, the reminder of that magnificent scroll), brought me back and sent me off to RightStuf to make an order. I may have to print the review to tuck in with the disk when it comes.

Bravo.

Akio Watanabe created Araragi's design himself for the anime because he was never depicted in the LN illustrations.

Does this mean that none of the male characters are Vofan's original design?

I have no idea. I just know for sure that Araragi was Watanabe's design. I'm not sure about Oshino, Kaiki, Episode, etc. But it can be assumed that if they weren't pictured in the illustrations for the LN's then they were probably designed for the show by someone other than Vofan.

Why can't I find anything about Onimonogatari in the encyclopedia? I can find all the parts except this one.

Onimonogatari is one of the five story arcs of Monogatari Series Second Season. It isn't a whole show or season to itself. The Monogatari Series Second Season encyclopedia entry covers Nekomonogatari White, Kabukimonogatari, Otorimonogatari, Onimonogatari, and Koimonogatari, each of which is something like 4-6 episodes of the whole season.

That makes sense. Thank you.
