I imagine if Ghost in the Shell were released today, the publisher would insist we call it Mobile Robot Riot Police Squad Force, and it would never gain traction outside of anime fandom.

If Big Hero 6 wins, it may say Disney, but there are many nods to the sentai genre. It felt quite a bit like old-school anime in a lot of ways...though fluffier.

Riddle Story of Devil. Why didn't they just call it "The Devil's Riddle"?

It's a damn shame about Vancouver/Ocean dubs. Black Lagoon is probably my favorite anime dub of all time, and Ranma 1/2 is also up there.

I'm still a bit surprised that the whole cast, right down to minor characters, could come back for Roberta's Blood Trail. Lack of work is a pretty good reason for somebody to leave and be unavailable for future projects.

I was under the impression that one reason for Canadian dubs was to help get shows on Canadian TV - IIRC there are or were laws that a certain percentage of material on Canadian TV had to be produced in Canada, and the idea was that dubs produced in Canada helped meet that quota.

I really wish I could have seen Kaguya to see if it's any good, but it would be cool if it does win to give anime even more notice and respect. In the future this might help campaigning and avoid snubs like those given to the Satoshi Kon movies.

About weird titles: let's not forget FLCL/Furikuri/Fooly Cooly. The ultimate tongue twister.

I found Kaguya Hime Monogatari to be a sad movie, although not on the scale of Grave of The Fireflies.

Did any Satoshi Kon movies get the minimum number of screenings to be eligible to be nominated for an Academy Award? Would a delay in releasing an anime in the USA make it ineligible to be nominated?

Kaguya's got a good chance because they snubbed its only major competition.

Canadian dubs are not produced with the intent of getting it on TV in Canada (and this includes the "alternate" Ocean dub of DBZ, which was produced for Europe). However... it does help. A Canadian network is much more likely to give a show a spin if it's dubbed in Vancouver since it qualifies as 50% Canadian Content, helping the Canadian networks satisfy their quotas. Had Inuyasha and Gundam SEED not been dubbed in Vancouver, YTV's Bionix block may not have even happened.

That said, I wish distributors (namely Viz and Aniplex) would start sending more projects to Vancouver again. They produced some fine work in the late 2000s, and having some major titles qualify as partial Canadian Content would go a long way in getting anime back on TV up here.

Some of my favorite stupid English titles?

Tweeny Witches
Angel Beats!
Martian Sucessor Nadesico (ok, Nadesico is the name of the space ship, but the other two words? Useless, except to imply it takes place in space)
Infinite Ryvius

But over the years, I can't help but think I've become immune to stupid names, it takes a lot more to stand out as a dumb name now.

Also, although I simply must root for How to Train Your Dragon 2 to win, the only one I'd be genuinely upset to see win is Big Hero 6 (even though I haven't seen Boxtrolls, Kaguya, or Song of the Sea, though I will probably just blindly throw money at Song of the Sea when it hits blu-ray). I usually leave a theater thinking "that was good" or "that was bad" but I was just left with this bland taste in my mouth. Everything has been done better elsewhere, go watch The Iron Giant, which is like the good parts of Big Hero 6 as a full movie. I didn't know jack about any of the other characters except Hiro and it didn't really matter and it was just so damn obvious where it was going with the plot well before every turn that it made it not very fun to watch. I was left bored in the end. I think it was only nominated because Disney and they are low hanging fruit when it comes to Oscar animated movie awards (because they seem actively offended to give it to anyone other than Disney or preferably Pixar). I know a lot of people loves Big Hero 6, but it did just nothing for me, it really left me disappointed when it looked like it was going for Iron Giant, then turned into a generic action movie.

Well the alternate Dragon Ball Z dub for eps. 123-291 was produced IIRC because it was actually easier to show on Canadian television than the FUNi dub, which didn't fulfill the quota. It was also shown in Europe because the same distributor had the broadcast license.

But the reason so much anime was dubbed in Canada in the 90s was because of the exchange rate. They could hire and cast decent actors up there for good prices in comparison to US voice actors at the time.

Unfortunately, it's the exception. One thing about Ocean dubs: they are notorious for their re-casts. Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkoku, Dragon Ball Z, Ronin Warriors, and Inuyasha all had many voice actor replacements.

If Viz ever dubs that 2008 Ranma 1/2 OVA, the only actors I could honestly see returning are Richard Ian Cox (Boy-type Ranma), Cathy Weseluck (Shampoo), Paul Dobson (Happosai), and Willow Johnson (Kasumi). Everyone else has either moved to the US (David Kaye/Soun Tendo, Michael Donovan/Ryoga), are busy with live action work (Venus Terzo/Girl-type Ranma), have vanished off the face of the earth (Myriam Sirois/Akane, Angela Costain/Nabiki), or have passed away (Robert O. Smith/Genma Saotome).

I didn't think Angel Beats! was that strange since there is a character named Angel and music is featured heavily in the show, hence "Beats." I have no explanation for the punctuation, though.

At this point, I'm mostly the same way when it comes to weird titles. Usually, the only thing I say to myself is, "Oh, Japan.," and I leave it at that.

FWIW: "Ghost in the Shell" has always been the English title of that series, going back to the original manga at a time when there would have been no expectation of an English edition being made. Sometimes made-in-Japan English titles do work out. (See also: "Dirty Pair," "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure," and "Slam Dunk.")

OTOH, Kouhei Kadono gave us the "Boogiepop Phantom" series, but I think he outdid himself with his YA mystery novel "No Oxygen, Not to Be Mirrored." The Japanese title, literally translated, means "Oxygen Is Not Reflected in Mirrors."

Also:

"Fate / Stay Night" - seen half the series now, but have no idea what "Stay Night" is supposed to mean.

"Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet" - looks like an SAT-word-that-someone's-electronic-dictionary-spat-out title

"Selector Infected Wixoss" - This one kind of embodies the phenomenon for me at the moment. Not just incomprehensible; it breaks through to what-on-Earth-were-they-thinking-of levels of incomprehensibility.

"Clannad" - as pointed out in an ANNcast a while back, a research fail on the part of the creator that we're now stuck with; not an anime about an Irish folk band.

Yep, the schools teach 'em just enough English to make 'em dangerous.

Oscars

The chances for Kaguya don't look good. These are the Best Animated Feature betting odds I found on Oddschecker:

How To Train Your Dragon 2: 8/13
Big Hero 6: 2/1
Song of the Sea: 8/1
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya: 8/1
The Boxtrolls: 16/1 (with most sites offering 12/1)

I don't know how well betting odds predict the Oscars in general, but they did well last year. I'm not holding out hope for Ghibli to beat Dreamworks and Disney this time.

Titles

My favorite case is Asobi ni Iku yo!, which has been released in America under two completely different titles, Bombshells from the Sky and Cat Planet Cuties, neither of which translate the original title.
