It's unfortunate that the only official English release of this was a theatrical feature-length edit 5 years later.
Probably the most ironic of it all is that the complete series was dubbed into English not once but twice, first when shown on air in India, and later in Philippines, but neither of those dubs, nor any English subs, have ever been included in any existing dvd-releases. Fate befallen far too many World Masterpiece Theater entries in the English world unfortunately... Fortunately it has been fansubbed twice in its entirety so it's not completely lost to us. Though personally I came to enjoy another Alps-inspired WMT title more; Alps Stories: My Annette.

Well, ironically, that's the same problem Japan had before the 90's: That's what happens when you isolate yourself from the world, and all the rest of the world has to go on is classic movie images.
They'll just never get away from Heidi, although at least Japan has the '74 anime, and not Shirley Temple. |

My first contact with anime as a toddler, not knowing what anime was back then, obviously. Ah, the nostalgia. Saw every episode of it on TV in the 80's, only to find out so many years later that it was directed by Grave of the Fireflies Takahata.

Blanchimont: Well, I'm not a lawyer, but the main sticking point in bringing some of these over here, is that they probably gotta pay the author's estate. And then, the second issue is that the only children's entertainment which sells here nowadays is the YA crap.

I wonder what that would sound like. I'd imagine it'd sound horrible (to the English speakers in those countries, our dubs may sound bad to them) and the quality would be comparable to an Animax dub. |

Well, thanks for the interesting article ANN (although I already knew of this from Wikipedia prior to this). But yes, the show has been acknowledged for bringing in Japanese tourists to Switzerland.

Didn't something similar to this also happen with the Anne of Green Gables anime and Prince Edward Island in Canade? I read somewhere that some of the tourist areas have signs in Japanese as well as English.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Even outside of the anime, Anne of Green Gables is still a draw in Japan. Last year, one of NHK's Serial TV Novels (live action dramas with 15-minute episodes airing daily) focused on the life of Muraoka Hanako, the woman who translated the Anne of Green Gables novels into Japanese. It was called Hanako and Anne. The movie series starring Megan Follows series has a following as well, I think. |

Thank you very much for this News. It`s nice to hear about Switzerland on ANN. I have to admit, when I went last year to Japan, I always gave people postcards from my home town in Switzerland as a present.
When I took a taxi in Nikko to go to the Edo Wonderland, the driver asked my where I was from. When I answered Switzerland, he remebered this anime. Maybe this anime is not the only reason why Japan and Switzerland get along. Japan and Switzerland have the same colors on the country banner, too. One is a cross and the other is a cirlce. I was impressed by the Eureka Seven AO OAV. I really liked how much detailed they showed Switzerland. Of course there were some minor errors in Zürich but still, it was really well done.
