Some of these, specifically the first few licenses announced seem like really bizarre choices and very unlike Discotek. I watched the first few episodes of Strike the Blood, for instance, and while it wasn't bad, I can't imagine it would be in high demand. I hope the company isn't overextending itself by licensing just whatever they get their hands on.

Maybe I'm just not very in touch with the average anime fan, but I don't recall a lot of buzz about some of these titles.

Free! was a bit of a surprise. I'm not interested in it myself, but I'm sure plenty of folks are. Seemed like the kind of thing Funimation or Sentai would get.

What I'm really grateful for is that they picked up Robot Carnival and Night on the Galactic Railroad. And a lot of people will be picking up the SF II anime and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

So I guess this is what may happen to any titles Crunchyroll received the home media rights to. Pretty unfortunate for Free to be distributed this way.

Really unusual seeing this much stuff from discotek, especially all at once. Free! is the most surprising, since it's a much more mainstream property compared to what they usually offer. Also, I thought they had a very small staff, so this seems like it'd be overwhelming. Now I'm curious to hear about how the company is doing, and what's changed for them to take on so many properties. An interview on anncast would be really interesting.

Looks like the newer titles are to be DVD only for now. I probably wouldn't have bought any of these, but it doesn't bode well for anything Crunchyroll may give Discotek that I may want to own...

At least Sentai would almost always release most titles on Blu-ray, even some time later down the road.

Indeed. I am happy we're getting both seasons of Free!, but sad that it's two different companies handling both seasons.
I really feel bad for the ones who were hoping to get both seasons on BluRay. I don't really mind season one being DVD-only, but I know some people are very upset about it.

Wow! Looks like Discotek is a real player now.

I'll be buying quite a few of these titles. Really happy with the idea of getting Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust, and Night on the Galactic Railroad on Blu-ray. Oh... and Robot Carnival! Yay!!!

Kind of disappointed about the lack of commitment to Free! (no dub, and no blu-ray). I'll support the title anyway, but my feelings about how they are presenting this are definitely muted.

Surprised to see The Earl and The Fairy license. I own all the manga volumes, but never knew there was an anime. Definitely buying that.

edited to add : I guess Crunchyroll decided to partner with a company that is decidedly not in the streaming business in any way. I hope Discotek hires Justin to author the blurays so at least they will be done well.

I just hope the Bloodlust BD is actually a film transfer. I also hope Arpeggio is offered on BD, DVD only would be a no-go.

A bit of a Shame that Arpeggio won't be getting a dub but I am SO happy to finally be able to get for my collection X) I was worried it will never get released here

So, they just licensed these all at once or are just now announcing them?

Kind of weird that Free! and Free! Eternal Summer have different licensors.

Personally not very thrilled about all these titles, but I guess I could take a look at some of them. Earl and Fairy looks quite fun and I liked the Street Fighter II Movie.

The Free situation is strange though. Here we are now with the second season getting a dub AND a Blu-ray release, but the first season is (for now) sub-only and DVD-only, not to mention 2 different licensors.

It's not mentioned on ANN, but Arpeggio and all the newer titles are only getting DVDs for now.

Well, it was revealed some time ago that Crunchyroll has received the home media rights. And this is what happens...

Good for Discotek, seeing them taking the next step in being a true R1 player. Just means more anime for everyone.

Saw this on their FB page earlier and was surprised at how many series they got. I'm glad Vampire Hunter D and Night on the Galactic Railroad are getting released. I'm also glad I can finally get Arpeggio, but a blu ray would've been nice. Also I'm surprised no one had picked up Strike da Blood before. I really expected Viz or Sentai to release it. And it looks like the Free issues continue. On the FB page Discotek said they might do a dubbed release for it in the future. Doesn't affect me, I've no interest in it, but interesting news all the same.

So everything that Crunchyroll got physical rights for was sub-licensed by Discotek?

Probably the best that could be done if a deal with either Sentai or Funimation could not be worked out, especially if it was "All or Nothing" and the majors balked at that.

It may not be as much work for Discotek's staff as you might think since these are already subtitled so could be "Bare Bones Released" you would think.

It's all about the money that the companies have ( Or don't have ) on hand. Looks like Discotek went thru the couch cushions and hit the jackpot.

If the licenses for Free! and Arpeggio are the result of home media rights that Crunchyroll owns, I suspect that Blu-ray rights might not have been included. Question

Crunchyroll would do the cheapest thing possible if they were pressured to buy home video rights in order to get streaming. I guess...
