Must be to counter reverse importing which make sense Japan and USA blu-ray share the same region. DVD region code in Japan and USA are different (USA's Region 1 vs Japan's Region 2).

Yes I'm aware of this stupid reverse importation but this is something that Japan needs to work on. Gee I wonder how long is the hold back period? This is something that you need to content the government.

It's only worth seeing for the visuals, so no BD is a major deal breaker. I don't really buy a case for reverse importation on this film since it did terrible numbers in the theaters and wasn't a big disc mover either.

Well don't blame it on the JPN government, blame it on the companies. Unless Japanese companies reduce the price for anime DVDs/blu-rays (which I highly doubt), Japan will put policy like this to counter reverse importation.

To be honest, I'm taking economic 101 class at my community college and I learned about supply & demand and I would agree if anime on blu-ray/DVDs are over-priced and expensive like in Japan, then it would make sense they should reduce the price to make it easier and not to fear reverse importation. But I was told (Answerman, etc...) every time companies in Japan try to make anime DVDs/blu-ray cheaper it's a bad thing in Japan. It mystified my mind, and the way I learned about economics and the way supply and demand work. I mean is Japan the only country that doesn't follow supply and demand rule when it comes to anime.

Also it doesn't help that the tax hike is making sales in Japan worse, and I've read it that retail sales continued to decline in Japan (which might include sales of anime items).

EDIT:

Well that might explain it.

It's weird that this has lot of the Sentai talent pool (several of which have done or do Funi work) yet it's not a Sentai product.

I just saw this film at the Freer Gallery with Shinji Aramaki appearing in person to present it. It's visually quite interesting and well-put together, but there was a LOT cut from this film. If this edition has the deleted scenes, then it will be DEFINITELY worth the purchase. If not, then purchase mostly for the visuals. This is Shinji Aramaki's own Harlock, and it is quite dark. This film was also created for 3d, so hyperspace movement via lines in space is a staple to this film.

It's a decent movie, but the "twists" in it are a little hokey, and one of them makes Harlock nearly impossible to root for.
