I remembered hearing this on the CBS News radio today. That's a big honor for the big G.

Congratulations to Godzilla becoming Tourist Ambassador.
Here's hoping he'll save his destructive powers for actual monster fights.

It's about time, you'd think with the Godzilla stereotype being passed around in the US and elsewhere for 35+ years would've gave the tourism department the message by now.

I think he should have gotten the tourism ambassador last year for his 60th b-day!

Surprised it hadn't happened yet. It took this long for Tokyo to realize that a lot of people associate Godzilla with Japan. I hope I can see him the next time I make a trip to Japan.

There was a bribery scandal and he had to step down. You know how the Japanese are, one scandal, and you're done. Ghidorah will be lucky to get a salaryman job.

And Japan with Godzilla too. The big guy's probably the single most famous Japanese native internationally.

@CrowLia and leafy sea dragon: It's possible that while both are famous Japanese icons, Kitty might be more famous with all the merchandise.
One of Anime Boston 2015's guests was Haruo Nakajima, the original suit actor for Godzilla. To be able to have the original Big G there must have been an honor for many fans.

Yeah, definitely Hello Kitty is comparable in fame, if not more so. There's a surprising amount of people who don't realize Hello Kitty is Japanese in origin though, whereas absolutely everybody knows Godzilla is.

I thought it was more like Godzilla was having problems finding work in his home country, so he immigrated to the United States briefly because he figured Americans were giving him more respect.
