Glad you finally took the chance to get back to Saikano, Bamboo. I remember watching it myself years ago, and being moved to buy the series. Unfortunately, while it held up well for you, I rewatched it fairly recently with my wife (who had never seen it) and sadly the magic was mostly gone. I don't know if it was a product of getting older, or perhaps being in a successful marriage relationship, but it just wasn't the same.
There was one exception, however -- the part I loved most about the series back then I still love very much today, that being the oft-used background song Kokoro no Kage. Even today, it remains as haunting and perfect for the series as it ever was. The series as a whole may not be my thing anymore, but that song will stick with me always, as a poignant memory of emotions past. With regards to Pet Girl of Sakurasou, I had the same reaction you did when you reviewed it for Shelf Life, as did my wife when I convinced her to get past the first few episodes. While we didn't end up buying it in the end, we were glad we watched it; all the characters were lovable and believable, and I know my wife in particular got emotional when it reminded her of parting from her college friends after years of good memories. That being said, I feel like the main character ended up more or less picking the wrong girl, which was annoying. But whatever, it was a nice bit of fluff with a bit of heartfelt emotion. Also FYI, the link to your Shelf Life review of Sakurasou also points to Carl's, so someone should probably fix it. |

Re Sakurasou: An anime blogger who read the entire series (they're quite fluent in Japanese) says the anime covered the best parts of the books, Vol 1-6. The later volumes 7-10 started losing steam, and the ending was described as disappointing.
The blogger felt the anime was more superior to the LN. The LN was described as "raunchier, with repetitive prose and characters constantly talking about boobs and panties". I, too, have been watching Space Pirate Mito (though a bit slower than I'd like, I've finished disc 2, so 9 eps out of 13 for the first half, will get to the second half soon enough) and I'm really enjoying it. I wasn't sure what to expect really, I just remember that during the last Nozomi sale, I went on their youtube site and test ran a lot of things, including this one. But this one made me go "this is fun 90s goodness, I think I'd like some more and c'mon, dude, it's like, $30 MSRP!".
I also agree that the dub is a blast, and whoever is doing the guy alien (Matsuki Nenga) was having way too much fun, particularly whenever he says "Sissstar!" in a way that kind of reminds me of when Helena says it in Orphan Black or summons "Mr. Roboto". But everyone is having fun in this dub, I rather wish I got that sense of fun in more modern dubs, even if I think the way they're saying "Aoi" is weird. I would love to take new pics of my collection for an update! I submitted mine years and years ago, but it's just changed so much! And I just got a new camera (first thing I'm doing is selling some more things on eBay), so now I can again! And I like taking collection updates like twice a year. Will probably just do it after Free Comic Book Day and associated sale though (usually I do it after Otakon and Xmas) |

Where to begin with Space Pirate Mito, the odd and ugly character design or... actually, that is a good point to start.
I like the show, I love the plot and the comedy's good too but why does everyone have to look so weird? I suppose it's for the best not to mention the plot "twist" that occurs between the two series- mostly because it turns the show from an inversion/continuation of Please Teacher! into a far more direct copy of another show or two about aliens and, well, that twist. I have the MB collection but does it have a bonus OVA or not? I've heard something of the sort but I don't know for sure. Saikano, that amazing gut wrenching show about love and apocalypse but I'm still undecided about buying it. I've watched it once and it left me depressed for days. It has my favorite use of narrative flashback, used to reassure the viewer that everything will be ok and then... Genius, especially at which point in the relationship it gets used. All that hope yearning to grow gets crushed under inevitability. I'll buy it. No. Maybe... Maybe if it had the OVA sequel. No. And Noir strikes again. If this was an anime movie, it'd be one of the best out there. Too bad it's a 26 episode series. Pet Girl's ok but my problem with the show is the casting of the two leads and nothing to do with characters or story; Same people, same voices, same performances all over the place. Now, if it was dubbed, that would have helped. |

Saikano was terrible. Bamboo focused on just the relationships but she did so because of the appalling writing that permeates every other aspect of the show. spoiler[The setting has no explanation; the war seems to be against the United States, judging by the military hardware, but why would America attack one of its closest allies? The fact that the military would give all that impossibly-advanced technology to a random high school girl is bad enough, but then they don't do anything else like train her or give her mission briefings. And wouldn't she need full-time mechanics to keep all that prototype technology running properly? Finally, the concept of her transformation and weapons loadout is awful; the moment fully-formed missiles magically appeared out of her back I knew I was watching a stinker of a show that didn't care about logic, it just wanted to be the Saddest Show Ever.] Yeah well screw you Saikano, you were a waste of my time, and it's a good thing that I downloaded you or I would have wasted my money as well.

The OVA is not a sequel; it's a side story that ends, IIRC, before the end of the series. |

In regards to Sakurasou, I finally decided to give it a shot because of reading Bamboo's take on the show here. Blind bought it during the RightStuf winter sale for relatively cheap and ended up liking it a good amount. The name and first episode definitely do not give the show any justice as those were the reasons I had never bothered watching it when it was initially airing. But the feeling of Kanda and some of the characters definitely hit a personal place for me and allowed me to connect with them. Even though by the end I was constantly getting annoyed by Kanda since he always felt so emotionally aggressive, for lack of a better term. Not sure how to describe it.

I just spoiled that "plot twist" of Space Pirate Mito for myself, and that's a good thing. It went instantly from "meh, sounds vaguely interesting, but I already have too much to watch still" to "ooh, looking forward to watching this".
See, spoiling isn't always a bad thing. Knowing what's coming can make things more interesting instead of less. |

Seitokai no Ichizon was mostly nice due to its parodies and references, and - as Paul Jensen wrote - when the show tries to be more serious, its appeal (as little as it had) diminishes. I found myself enjoy about a sentence or two per episode, and for a comedy series, that's not good.
If there was intermediate option between Rent and Discard, I would probably place this show there. |

So Mito is good? It has been sitting in my unwatched pile for ages after I picked it up. Might be finally time to watch it.
Did AnimeWorks ever release S2? Or is that only part of the Noizomi release? |

I started watching Sakurasou but didn't last for very long. I think, like, two episodes in and I stopped watching. It wasn't necessarily bad, but it just didn't resonate with me. Cliche childhood friend love triangle, righteous protagonist, and random insert fanservice, the usual.
