Spectacular article, Nick Creamer. Haven't read such an insightful article in a while.

This was a really beautiful writeup. Thank you for such a great detailing of what makes Shirobako's unique combination of optimism and realism so special.

I think the piece was a bit long, but I agree with what Nick says. Shirobako is a great anime. I hope Sentai has the vision to create a dub that does justice to it and, if possible, a great collector's set.

That was surprisingly motivational to me. It really hit a nerve and gave perspective to my current situation. Thanks much for that Mr. Creamer.
Can't wait for this show to come out on BD. I would also love another excellent Sentai collector's set.

Man, I love Nick's writing. This editorial was a terrific idea! It's a great way to talk about things too general to want to put into a formal review, which are still highly relevant take-aways that are worth thinking about.

Shirobako in particular was a standout series, and its unique, highly relateable outlook on life and struggle deserves more discussion. Reading parts of this brought a tear or two to my eye... no joke. Which is funny, because it's the second time in three days that something Nick wrote has done that (I was reading an old article on his "Wrong Every Time" blog... 'Gen Urobuchi and the Human Spirit,' I think was the title)....

I hope to see more of these in the future!

Great article! Shirobako is now my favorite anime. Please do more articles like this analyzing a specific recent show.

Man, this hit hard, but in a good way. I'm struggling to make a living in the arts (3D animation), and I'm constantly reminded at every turn that my work is outsourced, and that it's super competitive and cutthroat, etc.

Which is all painfully true, but remembering why I wanted to get into this industry, what inspired me to do it in the first place, is what keeps me going through all those long, agonizing crunch times.

Thank you VERY much for writing this article. It really made me think about my motivations, my past and my future. Add to that the screenshots of one of my favorite animes and you just made my day.

Cheers.

Please see if you can host some of Nick's older articles from his "Wrong Every Time" blog. They deserve a larger audience - particularly his thematic essays, like "Gatchaman Crowds and the Death of Gods", "Sekai Seifuku and the Island of Misfit Toys", and "Trust, Agency, and The World God Only Knows."

I've just got to the point in my life where I'm a college graduate floundering around with balancing the present and where I want to be in 5 years. The real world is a vicious place, and Shirobako did an amazing job showing how the difficulties you will inevitably face are important in better understanding yourself. It depicts this strange dichotomy of pleasure and satisfaction that I've run into with my work--I may not necessarily have fun every second on the job, but as long as I've come out feeling satisfied with my contribution to the project and what it strives to achieve I'm in a good place to be, and what else can you ask for? We were very lucky to have a show like this air.

I think having more opinion pieces/editorials would be a welcome change for this site. These are the types of pieces that make me look forward at the end of a season because I enjoy few things more than getting insight of how people engage with their art. It's a cool thing to see how differently people react to the same imagery because of their personal experiences they bring to the table. Reading articles like this one let us gather what the writers here find worthwhile in their media which will also color the way we interpret their episodic reviews, so I think it has some long-term sort of benefits for the viewership. I'd happily read more of these pieces from all of the ANN staff.

Very honest. I love this series. I plan on showing Shirobako to my dad, Edgar Burcksen, a veteran film editor in the business almost 40 years to see what he thinks of the struggle presented in the series about producing entertainment and anime specifically.

I think he will be curious to learn how the anime he has seen, like Yowapeda (he is an avid cyclist), get made compared to countless types of productions he has worked on, yet still continues to cut movies to this very day. (And write about it too for Cinema Editor magazine.)

He also loves trains, but I am waiting for a better anime than Rail Wars.
