Gu "belongs" to Renge, not Hotaru. Like most animals I believe Gu thinks He "owns" Renge, kind of like my Cats own me and I'm a poor excuse for a servant if you ask them.

I knew Renge would win, but I'm surprised/glad to see Komari placing as closely as she did. My vote goes to Koma-chan!

...as SHE SHOULD. No one can top Renge in this show, and I dare say even many other shows of this kind. |

If we're talking all the characters on the show, I'd choose Kaede "Candy Store" Kagayama, because she's voiced by Rina Satou and also because I found it hilarious the time she threatened to put a choke hold on Natsumi.
But of the main four girls, my favourite is Komari Koshigaya because I totally still use a CD Walkman as well so I love that she's proud to own one (even if the pride is mostly because she's so out of the loop as to what's considered cool with city girls). |

Rather surprising that Konomi placed about Natsumi when she isn't even a main cast member. I would have been less surprised if Candy Store placed higher though.

Komari pushed Renge close; too close for comfort. But justice, sanity and cuteness prevailed (although Komari is cute too). Renge was Non Non Biyori. Take her out and the show wouldn't have been nearly as good.

Ren-chon does indeed rule. But I also have a special place in my heart for her older sensei sister. Some of my biggest laughs came from her. And for pure "Dawwwww!!!" it's hard to beat the episode where Candy Store interacted with baby Renge.

It's since been commented, but her babysitting Ren-chon was one of the show's finest combinations of moe and heart. |

^ I also like Kaede's seemingly desperate attempts to diversify her business interests, since I can't imagine running a candy store would be all that profitable a venture in a village where you can count all the kids on two hands, and that's including the ones who went away to high school.
I mean, I know the old dagashiya sells some other things besides candy, like magazines, but, if it wasn't a manga/anime, I'd wonder how Kaede manages to make ends meet selling candy for a pittance to only a handful of customers. |

^ Well, it's not like cost of living is very high, there. Ain't no farmer's markets around here selling a quart of cherry tomatoes for a buck...
(And the store is on the other side of a tunnel that "only the locals use". Maybe it gets tourist traffic over there.) |

You have to fill in the blanks a lot, but I also presume the candy store is really just a side business for the Kagayama family and Kaede's parents are some kind of farmers just like most if not all of the other parents presumably are farmers as well.
(We know the never-seen Miyauchi parents have rice fields, I assume that the never-seen father of the Koshigaya family also does something agricultural that keeps him busy most of the day. It wouldn't surprise me if one of the Ichijou parents works for a heavy equipment manufacturer for the agricultural industry and moved back out to Asahigaoka for field testing purposes or maybe to sell equipment.) |
