Not that bad of a setback, really, when you think how far off its release date is already.

It'll be interesting to see how they expand upon the world they built when the first film was largely about the Kaiju battles and the subsequent trickle down effect they had on humanity.

Obviously not that big of a difference. I love the first movie, but I have no opinion about the second considering I don't know what they're doing for it (and because it seems like the first was a stand alone). Still, I'll accept more information on it with open arms as more of the story is revealed.

Considering I did not even know they were making a second film, this is good news to me? I had the soundtrack from the first one stuck in my head for weeks, and I was really thrilled to have a mecha-themed "Japanesy" film be so eagerly embraced by mainstream culture(s). Yay. I'll even forfeit my rent money for the week and see in the theater.

As long as it's coming. And it's at least as good as the original.

because the first one made money? This is what hollywood does.
This has nothing to do with anime anymore.

As long as Ron Pearlman will be in this movie, it's all good.

Better to delay something and make it amazing than push it out too early. This is Del Toro, after all. He's made such amazing films such as Pan's Labyrinth, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Hellboy 1 & 2, Book of Life (didn't direct, but had heavy influence). You've gotta give him time.

I expect more delays before an eventual cancellation. The longer the gap the less people will care and the first barely broke even.

And maybe next time, the movie could even be good. PR was Godzilla Versus the Sea Monster with Godzilla removed and a new sea monster, not even named, killed every few minutes by big dumb robots controlled by small dumb humans.

So if the world is kaiju free and the Jaegar program was left to rot in one on the brink of kaiju infestation then logically.... logic has nothing to do with this franchise. The program is now fully staffed and funded in a world that doesn't need them.

Makes as much sense as a wall ... surrounding the Pacific? Wouldn't it have been easier to, well, Attack on Titan that scenario and wall the cities? Which would mean, for example, no walls in Alaska...

I can't wait until 2017- because then it'd only be another year until Godzilla (2014) 2; I'd even rather see At the Mountains of Madness than the big dumb robot sequel.

It's a schedule shift to make room for a more high-profile movie, in this case Fast & Furious 8 [which is now occupying Pacific Rim 2's April spot].

Let's hope they make as good as the first one (I think it was) to justify the long wait.

Hm, no more Kaijus? I wonder how they will continue the story with no more monster vs. robot battles.

I assume with more monster vs robot battles.

I hope it's better then the first. Don't get me wrong, I love the first. But it has a LOT of problems. Most notibly how it treats its female lead, it's cheery happy ending, Ron Perlman's entire role, and poor utilization of its core cool idea of 'drifting'.

It manages to hold itself up with cool robots and monsters beating on each other, but it's story is really weak sauce.

I think they can do better.

Agreed. I think they have the elements to make a great movie. They just didn't hit it out of the park.
