This show exists in a 1960s time-warp, doesn't it? Does that change how much cash the cartoon family apparently has?

It's always first or second in TV anime rankings mainly due to inter-generational appeal and it's time slot.

Owning a house - as opposed to living in a rented one - in Tokyo in this day and age already puts them pretty high on the financial security list.

@trilaan it is possible the original creator was inspired by the peanuts since they came out in 1950

The multi-generational appeal is understandable. I watched it when I used to live in Japan, and my mom watched it when she lived in Japan as a kid. Very simple show and the characters never change, but I'm pretty sure that they do modernize certain aspects within the show.

So it'd be a lot like those suburban sitcoms in 1940's and 1950's America where the family lived in a big house in what would now be regions with sky-high property rates, as back then the prices weren't so high and urban planners were encouraging people to go to the suburbs.

It could be and I would imagine the creator's estate has well over $1.2 million from royalties.

Isn't this also the only anime left that's actually cell drawn and not computer animated?

Not true. Homes in Japan depreciate ridiculously fast. If the home is 30 years old, it's only worth as much as the land it's sitting on. It's a serious problem that hurts regular peoples' ability to generate wealth.

That said, had the show taken place in the mid-eighties the house would have been worth tens of millions of dollars with just the land.

Nobody has smartphones yet, though Very Happy

This and Chibi Maruko-chan (which airs with it in a block) are good shows, and very good to watch if you're wanting to improve your conversational Japanese. The speech isn't too complicated, and it all revolves around everyday facets of Japanese life. Whereas something like Dragon Ball may teach a lot of useless Japanese, any term or expression you pick up from Sazae-san or Chibi Maruko-chan stands a good chance of being useful someday.
