Is easily-forgiven parental abuse a thing in Japanese pop culture? Or do they simply not recognize parental abuse as a thing in the first place?

I enjoyed the PSP game Zettai Hero Project for the most part, but the way it handled the protagonist's abusive family made me want to set fire to the while thing.

EDIT: Oh God I'm reading the TV Tropes page and he's basically frickin' Sugou from Sword Art Online. *shudders*

Totally off-topic, but now that you mention it, I do see a LOT of truly reprehensible parents being reconciled with their (usually main character) children. o_O Right now, I'm looking particularly severely The Devil and Her Love Song where her father who spoiler[raped her mother when she was 14 and got off scott free] forms a decent relationship with the daughter main character.

Honestly, it might have a lot to do with the Japanese concept of "harmony", wherein everybody strives to get along, no matter what, because group morale trumps individual morale.

Toradora comes to mind as a counter-example -- Ryuuji's attempt to reconcile Taiga and her dad blew up in his face, and her mom was only treated marginally better when she showed up at the end.

Japan is not the only Asian country like this. Forgiveness for even heinous crimes is quite prevalent in the Philippines, if you go by their Teleseryes (basically their prime time Soap Operas).

Now that it's finished, I want to pick up the whole series. But I just want to make sure that Kodansha US did not do any censoring, The nudity and blood/gore is untouched, right?

^ Totally untouched - you can see it all in it's original gory glory.

Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing the forgiveness issue, and I was also reminded of A Devil and her Love Song. In both cases it really soured the ending for me, and it also made me think of all of those shoujo titles with abusive "heroes." Clearly there is a different school of thought, as TarsTarkas suggests.

Yep, the whole forgiveness thing got to me too. Though, didn't turn me off at the end. Just added to the bitter sweetness of it all.

Loved the end of this series. Had me going there for a bit, but I like how (almost) everything ends up.

I jumped onto this series when it was announced to be ending in Japan. No regrets in having done so.
