When it comes to copyright & trademark, TOHO doesn't play around.

They're not suing Pacific Rim for the idea of giant monsters attacking, they're suing an independent movie actually putting the Big G himself in by name without copyright.
And that's just good old corporate no-no's, that were probably lost on the Spanish director. If they'd had Godzilla fighting a 100-ft. Mickey Mouse, and Disney sued, no one would blink. (Okay, bad example, but you know what I mean.) |

Oh, the irony is delicious on this one.
It just so happens not too long ago, Voltage tried that similar copyright infringement attempt on us Canadians only to be lost for a small amount of damages. For those who are not familiar with the situation, research "Teksavvy vs. Voltage Pictures". Anyway, considering it was blatantly obvious it mimics the main story and character of the Godzilla series, I do hope this idea gets shut down...or face another losing streak of lawsuits. |

Perhaps the situation might have been different had Voltage contacted Toho for their allowance of featuring Godzilla in their movie before they went ahead with it.

While I identify myself an anti-copyright person, even I agree that is this is dangerous because it's almost like this company was asking to be sued by putting Mazinger and Godzilla on that photo.

The problem with this is that sometimes Company A might ask Company B about using B's characters for a movie which B agrees to do but later B pulls the infringement card. |
