Good thing I can't attend. I don't think I could make it to the end of the exhibition without knocking one out, judging by those example pieces. Although given the subject, I'm sure I'd appear both horrifying & erotic enough to count as a performance piece. Hmmm...

While most photos shown in this article are giving me a 'guro' vibe, they don't invoke an 'ero' one. Maybe it's a cultural thing, like how the bare nape of a woman was/is considered sublime beauty by Japanese customs.

Incidentally, the Shunga (literally: “erotic pictures”) Exhibit is going to be held at the Eisei-Bunko Museum in Tokyo starting September 19, 2015 to December 13, 2015.

  • Interestingly enough, this will mark its first opening in Japan. The last time the exhibit took place was in 2013 in England, where it drew over 88,000 visitors in just three months.

    One interesting thing to note is that the Shunga Exhibit in England allowed patrons of any age to view the pieces, provided those under 16 were accompanied by a chaperone. However, in Japan, no one under 18 will be allowed into the exhibit.


Who'd thought Japan would be more prude about their own erotic art than the English! Laughing
