I always thought it was fairly obvious why people easily connected with anime: the material is humanistic enough to be relatable, while abstract enough to distinguish itself from painful realities. Also, the characters lack distinguishing features that would alienate viewers of different race/ethnicities....well, accept for the distinct absence of african-americans characters (with the exception being things like Black Dynamite and Durarara).
