and the price is definitely reasonable. however most of the dubs pursuits like myself would probably skip the series cause of the lack of one.

while yea, there are a lot of gundam fanatics that wouldnt mind at all of the series being sub only, but there are some that do. hopefully it will sell just enough where it would give the licensors the reason to release an english dub version.

That seems pretty unlikely given the age of the series, the length, and the fact that they couldn't do the dub in house.

A C- for the animation? You mean you don't like wipes? Because ∀Gundam is all about the wipes.

I love Turn A and would really like to purchase it, but before I do, does someone know why there's no BD's for it? I'd much rather splurge on BD's and would be willing to wait to do so.

I'm not 100% certain, but it could be because of its newer age (Japan doesn't like any of its own releases to be hurt sales wise by US releases), or the fact that they think the lack of a dub means it doesn't warrant it.

We do know that the original MSG is getting a Blu Ray release (maybe Zeta too, can't remember).

I remember watching this years back and I could only think of one thing before I dropped it: SOMETHING HAPPEN ALREADY! The problem with show is that it is TERRIBLY paced, going at a crawl with anything of significance being few and far between. There's a difference between being a slow burner, and just padding things out. Not the best thing Tomino has done.

I actually really liked the pacing. Sure, it's not everybody's cup of tea but it was nice to watch a couple of really relaxing episodes in between stressful work days.

The show's definitely end loaded though in terms of actual plot. While you can see where the story goes, most of it happens to start about midway through. I personally preferred the first half.

Turn A's just a really comfy show, up there with Xabungle.

Yeah, they just released the BD box sets for turn-A in 2014. I'm guessing that since those are fairly recent, either they were unwilling or wanted too much.

Personally, I've seen it quite a while ago and although I liked it, I'm not in enough of a hurry to rewatch it to bother with dvds. I'd certainly consider bluray if they eventually release one.

I repeat: there is a difference between being a slow burner due to complexities and intricacies in the plot (like Monster and nearly everything else Naoki Urasawa has written) and having nothing happen like in Turn A. It's just BORING. The man has no idea how to properly pace a narrative which is why it's no surprise the movie trilogy for Mobile Suit Gundam was a lot better than the TV show; it cut out a lot of the pointless fluff and got to the point.

I actually just finished the series (got my complete order of sets 1 and 2 from RS on July 7th or so, even though they moved the 2nd set's release date up from August 30th to the 4th) but honestly, I wasn't that big on it in the end.

Strangely enough though, the episodes Nick outlined as weak ones were ones I didn't mind and I thought they were nice for the honed in focus and world-building of these rural areas with neutral, pacifist characters being plighted by the disarray of war. They do feel like kind of quirkier episodes, but really, I find most of Turn A's substance and strength was when it was full eccentric Tomino. The first few identity swap episodes, the crossdressing episode, etc all had some interesting politics at play.

That stuff is fairly early on though, as the series continues it seems it reaches kind of a stasis in terms of plot and ideas and the individualism vs collectivism and intricacies to Dianna and Kihel's swap has diminishing returns - the Dianna Counter just keeps on being aggressive more for the sake of simple violence (they nonchalantly try to use nukes they found underground just to beat the Militia while damaging the planet in the meantime) than for reclaiming the Earth for the Moonrace and Dianna and Kihel's swap is mostly just them continuing trying to fulfill each other's duties and make decisions they think would be most rational for one another, but no big new developments really happen.

Things just kind of meander around until they decide to leave for the Moon to confront the Dianna Counter's instructor while leaving them on Earth to do as they please, and one thing happened in the space voyage that really irked me and brought a lot of the events into perspective: Harry Ord berates and threatens the crew members who try to head back to Earth from space with execution for their treason, but yet when the Dianna Counter LIBERALLY commits insubordination, terrorism and almost regicide, they just kind of ignore them or try to worm their way out of that bind. It makes me think that all of the passive natures between a bunch of the characters are roundaboutly enabling possible murder and destruction to occur.

Loran never fully destroys any of their mobile suits, he just lets them retreat with their slightly damaged machines when he could've dismantled them completely and just left the cockpits or something, Dianna never really punished the D.C. and allowed them to get away with a lot of crap, and Harry acknowledges what treason is and imparts that people WHO AREN'T FROM HIS OWN FACTION should get executed but the people who are AND ARE ACTIVELY TRYING TO CAUSE CHAOS be kind of brushed off.

It gets worse when they reach the Moon and the leader...spoiler[Agrippa Maintainer says he has no real jurisdiction over the Dianna Counter rebels once they get to Earth, so he can't really revoke his orders and expect them to abide by the orders (which seemed pretty obvious) so their journey was nearly for naught. It's also aggravating that it is only near the end of all this madness and leaving the Earth in the D.C.'s ruthless hands that Dianna decides to kill someone for the greater good (Agrippa) but then he is shot down by another Moonrace guy instead so Dianna wouldn't have to sully herself.]

It all seems pretty jaded and deplorable for all this to happen, and it undermines the good values of the characters - Loran and Dianna's idealistic pacifism, Harry Ord's loyal bravery, etc. I also think the finale was kind of poorly paced and didn't make some of the ideas it was hinting with through the characters as pronounced and important as they should be - Loran's purist views of peace v.s. Gym's Machiavellian path of destruction coupled with spoiler[the politicians, Guin of the Earth who seeks technological advancement no matter the cost and Agrippa of the Moon who wants to create binary worlds of peaceful citizens (Moon) and criminals (Earth).] But the direction of the last few episodes doesn't have enough urgency (they even play that light-hearted, goofy jingle and have a few mild comedic moments as the war gets in full swing) and the final battle feels a bit abrupt and emotionally inundated (I know Tomino's not usually the best with emotional heft, but it seemed like it was hard NOT to have some here).

Lastly the romantic subplots were a bit weird, especially at the end: spoiler[why did Loran kiss Sochie? I know they had a few moments, but Loran and Dianna were pretty close it seems, and they got together in the end, but it just made things overly complicated, plus Sochie should probably still have the dead commander in her heart still. ]

I think Sochie was just an annoying character in general, she was self-important, whiney, irrationally xenophobic (which Tomino suddenly kind of drops but then brings it up with one last line near the end when they are on the Moon "They are our enemy!" without giving it any natural progression) and just...annoying (didn't help that her VA was so shrill).

I don't know, I feel Turn A may have been one of those series that may have tinted people's perspectives with strong early content that made them hold the series' quality to its peak instead of as a whole coupled with the big names behind the production, but maybe I'm wrong.

If someone wants to refute/clarify some of the story notes I outlined and make an argument for the series' strengths, I'd more than welcome it, I was just rather underwhelmed with it all really.

@Aiddon: I will definitely agree with Turn A being hella sluggish in pacing (and also, that it just doesn't have enough engaging content to warrant it unlike yes, Monster and I'd say stuff like the 1999 version of Hunter X Hunter really gives the content more tension and emphasizes some of the quandaries and their moral potency in the early episodes as opposed to the 2011 version which glides through the first few arcs) but I think 0079 was adequately paced except for the first 7ish episodes before they head into space - I think there was enough character development, plot progress and such in-between all the MotW stuff (although it was still a bit TOO much perhaps). I thought Reconguista in G did a fairly good job even if it was a bit of a roller-coaster in it's early slow bit and the kind of brief ending. Tomino wanted it to be 4 cour but it did fairly well as a 2 and I could see it being maybe a 3 perhaps, but I think he got his points across well enough there and it didn't overstay its welcome.

Personally, Turn A is one of my favorite gundam series. Along with Zeta and Victory (sorry Mr.Tomino, I can't help it).
To Angel'sarrcanim, many believe that the kiss at the end spoiler[Was a goodbye to Loran's true love Sochie. It is implied that Loran is living as Diana's caretaker as her health declines do to frequent cold sleep, but that there is no romantic feelings between them. Diana is noted to have a wedding ring on her finger, but this is not present on Loran. The wedding ring is likely in honor of Will and their engagement. Loran and Diana do not share a bed and Loran does not address her as a lover would, but rather addresses her as Queen Diana. Any way this seems to point to a rather sad ending where Loran gave up his love for duty to his Queen (very in character for him).]
But it's cool if you care for turn a, us turn a fans know we are in the minority. I actually hear it is pretty hated in Japan. I just like and excuse to talk about Gundam Very Happy

Been going through this DVD at quite the clip since purchasing it at my local B&N. I've watched one disc a day and I'm down to the last one currently. Only managed to get one episode down at present on the final disc since I'm recovering from a recent tooth extraction, but I'm going to finish it tonight. Here are my thoughts so far:

-Pros-

*Turn A Gundam definitely has a cast both entertaining and spread out. Though some may grate on the nerves (Sochie) and some seem to simply be treated as window dressing (Miashei, even though I like her far more than Sochie), there's a lot to learn about each character. At one point, the spoiler[Kihel/Dianna switch] might seem like it's being played out too long, but there's a genuine depth to it that I find amazing and fleshes out the concerned parties.

*Despite the clunky storytelling at times, it really is a unique story. The characters are worth getting invested in and it's good to hear everyone's point of view regarding the events of the plot. In one case, the Gundam spoiler[helped with doing a huge pile of laundry], which may sound blasphemous and stupid to many, but considering the context of that scene, I feel it helps with the characters reflecting on their humanity.

*Easily accessible. The show isn't hard to get into and it's quite easy to watch one whole batch of episodes. Of course, your milage may vary depending on how much you can stomach the actual pacing, but the plot doesn't completely meander everywhere.

-Cons-

*Sochie. spoiler[Her voice and characterization are both irritating. That girl has some serious growing up to do and I hope she matures soon because I'm finding every important scene involving her to be more and more grating.]

*I know the story's pacing is definitely all over the place as are the character relationships which, as the review stated, tend to jump forward and back. For example, let's say one minute Protagonist A may be having a disagreement with Protagonist B and the two get into a heated argument over something (it could be severe or it could be trivial). Then the next minute, after an outside event occurs, the two act like they never got mad at each other to begin with and cooperate fully, while only occasionally making something like a pouty face to clue us in they were even mad at each other at all.

*Some of the character designs for the minor or side characters are just downright laughable and ugly. It's like they weren't even trying to draw human beings in these cases. You'll know them when you see them. The main cast and other important characters are obviously drawn great, but I'm not sure why they went out of their way to make nearly everyone else look like a truck ran over their faces. It's always Villager #67 and Soldier #90 that have to suffer.

*The translation, while fairly effective at getting the point across in most cases, tends to go off and do its own thing in a few instances. It's a bit hard to describe, but when they try to apply a typically long English saying to an incredibly simple Japanese phrase, it just bloats the subtitles unnecessarily. I understand this is done to make a phrase that makes more sense to us in English, but they could try paring it down a bit.

*The infamous one that will make some turn away in displeasure: no dub. I'd have liked to hear a dub for this, but I understand that this is something they either didn't want to spend money on or they had simply planned to keep it subbed only ahead of time. Skipping a dub, though, can potentially hurt both sales and interest in the show.

@HiNu

That's an apt way of describing their relationship, and that clears some of it up for me, I guess I was (and still am) kind of blinded by my disliking of Sochie that I wanted her to have a sad ending, but it was a bit give and take, so I'm on the fence.

I'm slowly getting through the franchise now but really loving it as a whole even if I haven't found a masterpiece quite yet, but it seems some of the entries people dislike are ones that end up promising for me and vice-versa, so I look forward to Victory. I like 0079, 0080, 0083 and G-Reco, don't like CCA, (I jumped ahead there kinda) Seed and Destiny and I'm not huge on 08th MS Team and Turn A, but Zeta, ZZ, Victory, X and maybe Unicorn look promising to me. G I'm in the midst of and it's alright, Wing I need to rewatch perhaps after getting half way years ago, 00 I might check out but I hear isn't too great, AGE I'll likely pass on, Build Fighters I'll see if I got nothing else to do and the new Mari Okada show I have doubts about but I'll see how it goes.

Badly written, badly directed, and just plain weird. I appreciate the unusual and fresh setting, but everything else about the show is full of issues.
