I live in Osceola County, Florida and the county school system ( There's just the one for the entire county. ) uses uniforms. They are appropriate for Florida, Polo Shirts with Slacks, Shorts or Skirts depending on the season and the student, shirts are different colors for different grades & schools, pants & skirts are beige. There are also local private & magnet style schools that use various traditional uniforms.

So it is not unusual here at all to see school kids lined up for the bus in "Uniform".

Hmm.... My school had uniforms, so there's nothing unusual in it for me.

England is predominantly uniform based, so it's not so jarring for me either. Must have been nice NOT to wear uniform, though.

Very probably a minor reason compared to the actual real-life prevalence of the school uniform in Japan, but I always figured that school uniforms were popular in anime--especially in school-based action anime--for the same reasons that uniforms in general are often used in stories overall: to give the characters a sense of unity, and then, ironically, it becomes cooler to see each character have subtle alterations in their uniform to give themselves an identity through that uniform and make it their own.

Does this also explain why women/girls that aren't even in school don sailor outfits? Like Lisa from Bleach or Ageha from Kyōkai no Rinne???

3rd world country here, schools use uniforms to hide the disparity in income/social level of the kids, because you get a middle class (for the country) kid, who can afford nice brand clothing in the same school as a lower class kid who buy his clothing second hand or wears only hand me downs.

then you get to govt. paid colleges and you see people wearing what other would consider party clothing as their everyday-go-to-school clothes (middle class) and people wearing what others would call beggar-homeless-clothing (the guys who can't even afford ful bus fare to college and walk there).

Wore Uniforms throughout my entire school days being that I'm British.

I think School Uniforms are a good thing. Helps students prepare for a working environment. Also it curbs individualism somewhat and as a result helps negate segregation and 'pack' mentalities etc. It can also help stop potential bullying for a multitude of reasons, least of which being Financial background.

They weren't much fun to wear everyday granted but I much preferred it to the alternative personally

When I went to High School uniforms were not required, heck we could even wear hats in school. Since then however, uniforms are starting to appear in the neighboring counties. While they haven't gotten to ours yet, where I use to live for a while did have uniforms for middle and high schools, and I've also read how bullying and school problems have gone down (not away but down) in the county.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more schools in the US start adopting uniforms. That being said, when I started to get into anime and seeing uniforms on everyone it didn't really shock me and I hardly noticed. This was mainly due to my girlfriend at the time, who got me into anime, was in a private school and was required to wear a uniform, plus as I said above schools around the area were starting with uniforms.

Fellow Brit here so seeing uniforms on weekday basis is a common sight, it was those occasional US TV shows which I thought were a bit weird when I was in high school.

I've moved around all over the US, so I've seen lots of schools when looking into places to actually attend. Some private schools demanded uniforms, others didn't. Public schools hardly ever did, mostly due to funding. Now that I'm in Orlando, I see more middle-elementary schools in uniforms than not, but the high schoolers don't seem to. But I'm in an area very close to a theater (actual performance theater, not a movie theater), and I remember my schools being more lax about dress codes during field trips rather than enforcing them, so my view might be skewed.

The few times I did wear uniforms were for curricular outings; as part of the orchestra, there were event-based dress codes, but that's not quite the same thing. Never wore a school uniform on a regular basis myself, though.

My mother wore uniforms all the way til she went to college; she came from one of the poorest neighborhoods in Puerto Rico and went to a local Catholic school. I asked her how she felt about uniforms ages ago, and she said they were something of an equalizer that prevented other kids from finding out how dirt poor her family was, though they were a pain in the ass to keep clean in 90-plus degrees year-round weather.

But honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about "suppressing" individualism; folks like that tend to find ways of standing out from the crowd on their own, from subtle outfit changes to the work they produce.

It was cool to see students not wearing uniforms in The Garden of Sinners.

But really, lots of schools have uniforms. I see plenty of private school kids that wear uniforms every day. It's not unusual. The only difference between that and anime is that the real uniforms never fit properly, whereas of course all anime uniforms fit the characters perfectly.

Before I got into anime I asked an American on IRC why "catholic school girls" kept coming up as a fetish/taboo and was told it was because of the uniforms. Coming from a country where most high schools have uniforms it came as a surprise.

It's easier to draw the same school uniform that a character wears everyday than to draw a new set of clothes everyday, so it's a little animation shortcut.

In real life, having a school uniform takes away some of the worry about what to wear that day. Just need a couple sets of uniform to last the season.

Also, Catholic schools signify purity and unspoiled innocence - a fresh slate. Their uniform represents that.

It can be subtle. Note that in Non non biyori that in spite of meeting in the same classroom that the middle school students wear a uniform and the grade school girls carry red backpacks.

I went to public school but I grew up in an area with a lot of Catholic schools. So, they were not that uncommon. I think though almost none of kids would be caught dead in their uniform outside of school though. So, that is something I've always found interesting in anime.
