Air Master being licensed is fairly interesting news. Not that it is a excellent show, it's ok, but still. It is another one of those unique shows. Also, Interlude is also interesting, but its ending is just odd and doesn't really make sense.
Does this also mean that Geneon has exclusive rights to all Toei animation now? |

And hopefully Galaxy Express 999 too. If I'm reading it right, it looks like everything Toei (that's not already licensed) is part of that deal. Like Geneon is handling distribution for them directly in R1. |

Geneon should finish Hajime No Ippo first. Otherwise, they're gonna need broadcast rights to help sell a series as long as Slam Dunk. Also, while I like the series, I don't get the logic in licensing the anime version of a manga that only did so-so in the U.S.

I don't think that you can say that for sure. Its not impossible to have two long but successful series. And I'm sure that if Viz or Tokyopop had Slam Dunk it would have done great. |

I don't see why Viz's marketing blunder from years ago would have an effect on the sale of the anime now. And the tv seires or films weren't based on that manga. It was a sequel to the source material. I think Galaxy Express 999 is one of the most well known anime films that isn't on DVD yet. |

I can agree that Tokyopop would be good for Slam Dunk, given their track record with b-ball manga, but not Viz. I mean they blew a potential money-maker like Hamtaro. Anyway, there used to be an Airmaster parody from the Kikkoman guy which made fun of the ending found at http://www.vap.co.jp/airmaster/main.html, but he had to take it down, cus King Records wasn't amused.

GATSU was not talking about GE999, he was talking about Slam Dunk. And Viz could have turned Slam Dunk into a hit; if they put it in SJ or released it under the SJ label. But outside that label, Viz does indeed have difficulties selling shonen manga it seems. Thats why Firefighter Daigoro isn't that big despite being supirior to virtually every shonen offering on the market. |

They have enough problems marketing Ultimate Muscle, which actually has an established audience. I'm not sure why Slam Dunk would somehow be different. Hell, even when Raijin tried to market Slam Dunk off the success of Vagabond, they couldn't make SD a hit. And to be fair, I don't remember the series being that popular in the fansub community either, even though it got a mention in TV Guide. Maybe the fact that it's not current with its basektball references is what hurts it. Or maybe it's cus the lead isn't a bishonen. Dunno, but it just doesn't click in the States right now. |

Rajin didn't have a very good marketing plan to begin with, and they never could get the amount of coverage Viz could give it by putting it in SJ. Ultimate Muscle wasn't that appealing to most manga readers, and its fanbase were mostly kids, and even if they would go out an buy the manga, they can take sales only so far. Maybe you'r right about the bishonen thing: it probobly wouldn't be as big as Prince of Tennis despite being loads better just because its characters are fairly masculine looking, but I still think it could have been a hit (they could have plastered 100 Million sold on the cover too).

In some cases, I agree with you. But their manga wasn't "cute and fluffy", so that's why it failed.
Viz put a preview in Shonen Jump, and still managed to delay it, thus losing potential sales from people who might be interested, but who didn't know when it would be out. And its fanbase of "mostly kids" was able to convince Toei to animate more episodes exclusively for the American market. |

Good question. I don't know if this is for all current titles & future titles for a certain period. I don't know if its for a specific number of titles. Nor do I know if it includes any catalog titles, for example Sailor Stars. [edit: Geneon's PR firm told me that the details were still being ironed out, so there's were no details (more than what was in the press release) that were ready for public consumption at the time.] I'm going to try to talk to Geneon directly tomorrow.
