I know it seems silly, but it really did distract me a couple of times. *shrug*

I don't think that's the case? Nothing negative is said about the resemblance to Iron Man.

It's less of a sequel and more of a complete re-imagining of the franchise.

Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi definitely know their Ultraman and it shows, especially when it comes to respecting the origins and motifs.

The art does take a bit of getting used, as was the case with Linebarrels. I had a hard time adjusting since I went through a Linebarrels binge before I picked this up.

As a child of the 70's there was nothing more splendid after school then watching that twisted hippy motif of the Ultraman show intro. This was second only to the moment that Hayata would clutch the Beta Capsule and yell out "Shuwatch".

This show along with Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot was my escape.

The irony is I loved them even though they were so incredibly campy. Yet I fail to see the draw of similar shows like The Power Rangers. It just reinforces your a child only once...........now for some anime ":}

You do have a point, for I watched both of the shows you mentioned when I was a kid, along with all the Japanese science fiction movies and monster movies.

But I think alot of these modern shows now have been dumbed down for the viewing audience.

What is "camp?" I see that world get thrown around a lot, but I've never been able to track down a single definition. Looking it up, it apparently refers to when performers are purposely being over-the-top, but there's none of that winking-at-the-camera bunk in the original Ultraman show. Plus, I don't get the feeling Rebecca is using it in that sense.

It basically means something that is extremely over-the-top and is aware of it. Looking at this I would say it applies to Ultraman quite well.

Camp is hard to define in words.
Personally I'd just define it through an example: The most pristine example of "camp" in my opinion is the original Batman TV series.

But in Batman one could argue it was intentional, while things like Ultraman are just a product of its time, they were not deliberately trying to be over the top or anything.

These days some people like to refer to anything old as "campy" just because. If that's the case, i think Star Trek was a lot more campy than Ultraman ever was, but go and tell that to a Star Trek fanatic..so, isn't the concept by itself subjective?
