While I haven't read the manga, that is merely a formality as it is on my wish list.
For anyone who hasn't checked the show out, I would definitely give it a shot. It has plenty of human drama and angst, with notes of hope and true beauty. The story is, in my opinion, very prescient in today's world.

I'm happy to see that there is someone else that prefers Munou instead of Unravel. Although its lyrics aren't as powerful as the first season OP's lyrics, I preferred the music and singer of the second one. I just couldn't stand the high-pitch voice of TK's singer.

Here in Peru it was ultra popular, just as much as SAO and Attack on Titan, and it felt a bit annoying because everything was about Tokyo Ghoul. Once I saw the anime, I knew that it didn't deserved the hype. It was good, but it wasn't amazing. Root A, on the other hand, made me like the series more, although its ending was a downer for me. In Root A, I started to have feelings for any character just as Gabriella said. Especially during the last battle arc. I didn't want anyone to die. And that's what I like about Tokyo Ghoul the most, because I haven't ever felt llike that before while watching anime.

I also think that if anyone wants to have a better experience of this franchise, one have to watch and read both the manga and the anime. Anime only watchers will feel the show was rushed and that it didn't give enough characterization to its side characters, like Touka, and especially Arima, and this happened more in Root A.

Nice article!

I love Tokyo Ghoul 100% for the fact that eventually there is a moment where you care about every character on each side. Even the most minor characters are humanized (in the sense that you can understand why they act the way they do).

The manga is incredibly intricately planned. Example:

The Tokyo Ghoul manga is exactly 143 chapters long. If you multiply that by 7, guess what you get? 1001. The manga is literally a countdown by chapter for Kaneki. It blew my mind when I discovered that.

There are other details like that, but another one that's obvious is that it literally has 5 arcs. A tragedy has 5 acts, with the third act usually being the turning point for the tragic figure.

Tokyo Ghoul is a tragedy in many ways, from the typical characteristics (protagonist with tragic flaw for ex.) to the basic structure.

It's a work with a lot of depth beneath it, despite initially just seeming like a mindless gorefest, which is what lead me to initially dismiss it. I'm glad I decided to try it again and then pick up the manga.

This show was the biggest surprise and the biggest disappointment. All because season 2 was so horrible. Makes me sad remembering it

I've been planning on watching the anime for a while, I'm just waiting for Funimation to finish dubbing the first season.

Great editorial!

Tokyo Ghoul Season 1 is one of the best anime i've ever seen, and it deserves every bit of its hype. It may have had a lower-end budget, but it's obvious the production staff put a ton of love and care into the product.

However, maybe it's time we admit that Root A (season 2) just wasn't that great? Nothing happened in it! (except for the violence at the end)

I've read the manga (most of it) and seen both seasons of the anime. Honestly, with all the hate the anime adaptation gets from manga readers, I was expecting the manga to be wildly better. But... it really wasn't. It had marginally better writing, and the pacing was more solid, but other than that the quality and essence of the story was basically the same to me.
As for the anime, I like the second season more than the first. The pacing was better, the pathos was more intense and occurred more often, the themes took shape much more and both the direction and writing were better. The sound design for season 2 was slightly better as well. Root A was definitely more unconventional, but I think they executed it well, so I don't mind. Root A's controversial ending didn't really bother me, either. I thought it was absolutely beautiful.

If only the anime would stay true to the manga Sad
Nonetheless, still an amazing series in the last 5 years or so.

I like the whole post but

Quote:
It also make a major storytelling deviation from the manga in its second half, but this doesn't ultimately make as much of a difference as you'd think. Both versions hit the same major story beats and only amount to subtly different endings.

I have to disagree. The 2nd half of the manga and anime are VERY different. The anime introduced plot points that were never answered and they became time wasters.

I did like the emotional scenes they did though but they cut out a lot of story points that are needed.

Same here. Given all the buzz about the show, I can see why Funimation decided to jump in with season 2 for the broadcast dub, but since I planned to watch in English, I ended up passing because I didn't feel like switching languages.

Aside from Touka as a character, (If you Hate Inuyasha, She's the new Kagome.) Here's my two of my biggest problems with the series as a whole:

1. The series (both Anime & Manga) has this Mean-Spirited Mantra that beats into your head of the phrase "He who fights monsters..." There's nothing beautiful about seeing people miserable. The Mangaka must have a massive "Hate-Boner" for the way he treats the likable characters and his audience.

And 2. One of my other biggest problems is the CCG's incompetence at tracking down Ghouls. They have all the government resources at their disposal such as fingerprint matching and DNA shxt but they never use them. Even the I.C.P.O. in Death Note were not this fxxking stupid!

Reading all the praise for the manga is weird, I read the first two volume and left with an overwhelming sense of "that's it?". It was just trying way too hard to be shocking, I think in the first 10 chapter you have the main character try to eat food just to have a long description of how disgusting it is, it get old really quick. Character have zero nuance to them, the good guy are obviously good (oh look a little kid, poor her) the bad guy are obviously bad (until he get the redemption treatment). At least the anime can blame it on lack of time, but the manga just spend so much time on banality just to rush trough important stuff with no subtlety.

Honestly you're far better off starting with the anime, you also have a pretty good soundtrack with a kick ass opening song. (I know nothing of S2 so can't comment on it)

Tbh it was useless. In the end it felt that the way spoiler[ Kaneki joined Aogiri was mainly an excuse to skip alot of manga material, e.g. Rize, etc. ] although I really like how they handled spoiler[ Hide's death ] i thought that was nicely done. If the actual end goal was different then i would've been inclined to agree.
Its just a weird monster, honestly dont know what the director was thinking adding anime original, and i know for sure it wasn't 'the original draft' since the original one shot had Kaneki as the antagonist.

Yeah it was different, but was used as an excuse to cut majority of Kaneki's scenes from the end half of the manga. Different yet the same in a way
