ARGH!

But i would like to hear an article about anime from major news sources that :

1.dont mention Yu-Gi-OH or Pokemon as a somewhat alpha of anime popularity

2.confuse manga and anime titles. Though "Apocalypse Meow" would make a pretty bizarre anime.

3.dont get biased information on anime by asking particular companies about what titles are flying off the shelves. "Ninja Ressurection, BG Crisis"

4.don't describe anime as cartoons that are not your daddy's Mickey Mouse cartoons. Its like comparing fruits and vegatables. Animation in America in america will always be Disney and Winnie the Pooh. Always.

And i would like to hear just how popular is Naruto anyway (before its licensed and sterotyped by the mass media). Even the kids I babysit for are familiar with it.

Very much a filler-type article, a puff-piece for ADV more than anything else. No need to apologize for not posting the thing earlier.

Don't expect a decent report from a reporter who can't distinguish a fan site (Online Ghibli, http://www.onlineghibli.com/ ) and Studio Ghibli's official site ( http://www.ntv.co.jp/ghibli/ ). Hard to believe that she's Japanese. Rolling Eyes

I already sent an email asking AP to correct their report. Hopefully they'll correct it soon enough.

anti-Disney? I usually link anime and Disney, both being "good" animation, and both popular in Japan.

Being Japanese has nothing to do with it. There's a difference between a serious Japanese anime fan and a regular Japanese (who doesn't know much about their anime). Just like there's a difference betwen a serious American animation fan and a regular American (who will ALWAYS link animation with family-friendly fare they take their kids to).

I posted the link to The Japan Times On-line for this same story on friday in an amine thread on friday (12-10) and at least they TJTO din't have these silly links to these sites in their article. To play catch-up about what we've been talking about since, go to the Anime section @ ANN and see the thread "A view of American fans from Japan".

I think there is some confusion between Ninja Resurrection and Ninja Scroll. Ninja Resurrection was mercifully short and really awful. Anime hyper

Ninja Scroll, on the other hand, is a fine example of really good anime.

Why not? Kids merchandising cartoons that happen to be Japanese in origin are the bulk of the domestic anime market (including merchandising, not just DVD sales), not the bilingual or sub-only purist-grade releases. It would actually be pretty weird not to mention them, if you're doing an article about the domestic market.

I might be wrong, but isn't Apocaclypse Meow technically a comic written by a Japanese-American about his Vietnam experience and not really a manga?

i emailed tempest and cookie about it. mebbe they just missed your thread?

i ain't tryin to steal no props. i saw the link somewhere else.

anyway, they mention pokemon and yu-gi-oh probably so people know what they're talking about. like if you talk about one piece, for example, and call it anime, people will be confused. but if you say "like pokemon" or whatever, then they'll know.

it's stupid, but...they were popular, so they were mentioned i guess
