Huh. I read the wiki for Dreaming Machine a while back that 600 of 1500 cuts were animated so I figured the process was farther in than the podcast suggested.
Ah well, enough about that tragic windmill. I'll take the answer the person Mike talked to gave. |

Also if you heard there was an actual lesbian protagonist, I hate to break it to you but those claims are overblown. Her best friend/roommate is definitely in love with her, but Hibiki's one of those all loving heroines who is kind of dense to these sorts of things. |

LOL. Never heard tea-aboo before. I do drink a lot of tea and watch a lot of British Detective Mystery shows. Though I have never tried to speak in any sort of Accent. Now I know that is a thing.

As usual, a fun Supernerds podcast. I missed Justin, but hopefully my dream of an ANNCast where all the gang sits down to discuss Shirobako will come true soon. That could be a good idea for a holiday special, Zac.

-I'm sure Mike will have a lot of with Ushio & Tora, which I have to catch up on (haven't seen last week for the newest one from today), but it's a lot of fun to watch. It also has some nice underlying depth in it, which I think weekly reviewer Lauren Orsini hits upon nicely, so I'll just say to keep up with those reviews. I'll probably check out the 90s OVA sooner or later, especially since the TV series has gone past what the OVAs adapted, because I hear that it's a bit more violent & expands on a couple of the monster-of-the-week stories, i.e. taking two episodes to tell them whereas the TV series did it in one.
Another show I've been impressed with is Saint Seiya - Soul of Gold. I'm purposefully holding on on watching episode 12 until next week, when the finale airs (so I can watch both together), but I have been more than pleased with the show as a whole. While it's an ONA like Sailor Moon Crystal, it's obvious that Toei & the staff behind this product actually cared about making a quality product. While there is the occasional odd bit of lazy animation (nothing than can't get fixed for the home video release, however), SoG looks infinitely better & given the effort. While I do prefer the first half of the story, because it actually gives some of the Gold Saints extra character development that they desperately needed (in my opinion, Cancer Deathmask has been completely redeemed in my eyes through SoG; he's a true "warrior of justice" now), the second half has still been good fun & stays true to the style of Saint Seiya. I also think bringing in Hideyuki Motohashi to do the character designs in place of Michi Himeno & the late Shingo Araki was an excellent idea, since he's the only other person who ever directly adapted Masami Kurumada's artwork via B't X; the end result is visibly different from Araki/Himeno's Seiya style, but still familiar. -I haven't kept up with the super-long Shonen Jump stuff at all (only saw ~90 eps of One Piece, ~50 eps of Naruto, ~25 eps of Bleach), but my friends keep/kept up with the manga of all, and they have always been able to keep me somewhat up to date with them, to the point where I am vaguely familiar with what's going on with One Piece, and I'm always up for a new movie. I'm glad with that, too, because I found One Piece Film Z to be an excellent movie in general. Still, one can catch up if he/she really, really wants to. Me & my friends got my cousin into One Piece, and earlier this year he eventually plowed his way through all of the anime & caught up; it took him a good few months, but he did it. |

LOL on the US political scene operating on your money versus being owned by corporates. I get way too many money requests also from political candidates who I would only prop up if they needed bus or carfare to, oh name one, any viable federal penitentiary that properly houses such reprobates for the remainder of their lifetimes. I'm desperately hoping there will be so much anime available to watch or back issues of manga to read in 2016 that I'll never have to endure the usual political sophistry on cable or the Big 3 ad nauseum up to November. Where is ear wax when 1 really needs it?
Good show, btw. Can't wait to hear you guys talk about Expelled From Paradise movie. Not a big fan (have watched it at least 10 times since receiving BD a few weeks ago). |

So Ben-to's the worst anime ever? Really? I recall not liking the second half but liking the first as popcorn entertainment, and if anything I just thought it was forgettable at worst sans the fact everyone was beating each other up for the silliest reason ever. I did forget about it until I was just now reminded and maybe I'd feel differently on it now since it's been a good while, but I most remember it being one of those things where it was adapted from a source material I could never get to (light novel) and I was stuck with the last episodes being on the crappy second of something volume where the chance of better material being forever out of my grasp. (if there ever was any to begin with, as enthusiast of long running manga I can have those kinds of hopes easily)
Stuff in my backlog I guess: Steins; gate is always something that I've been meaning to get to but for some reason or another something irl stops me whether it be work, laziness, crappy video feed or the like. It wasn't available for me to rent on Netflix I wanted to watch it dubbed because I'm like that and I was cool with what I heard and because of that I think I never got past episode 5 without just having to resort to online anime streamers which I hate now because they always mess up my computer and I don't like watching stuff on my tablet. (man once the money's right...) I'm into the first half of dragonball as a manga since I go out of my way to get the vizbigs for those and MAYBE I'll try out Z but it was never my childhood. I finally saw TV eva recently but I have no idea about what I feel about it personally yet and the only other popular thing that I can think of (and also care about) is Panty and Stocking which I have the same issues with as Steins; gate. Monster's not popular in the mainstream sense, I know, but trying to get a hold of that is ugh... FLCL: I'm a bit like Zac in that I need to hear more about this, although I feel like I'm more on the "WHY??" Wagon. Did Production I.G. just want a project where they could be "Eh, lets just do whatever we want" on? Was there a need for this somewhere, it's so out of left field, especially considering that's like the best animation car accident to ever happen (or something like that I suck at making good similes). It's mainly a reminder for me to finally get the DVD or Blu-ray for my shelf when the money's right , but whatever the new thing is will definitely be something worth keeping an ear out for at least. |

I thought the thing people hated about Ben-To was Ume Shiraume's character, in which case... Yeah; she's pretty awful. And she basically got her own episode (episode 9), which was also awful.

No, not "really." As I noted on this very podcast, when Mike does his "worst anime" panels he starts by showing a list of all the titles people have responded to him with as answers to the questions "what's the worst anime ever?" of which "Ben-To" is a common answer given. He then says "absolutely none of the above qualify, as they aren't bad enough!" then goes into it. I did note that I did just spend about 45 minutes talking about it on the latest episode of my own podcast: you can listen to it here, though bear in mind it's done with an assumption that the listener hasn't already seen the show in its entirety. I'm too lazy to reply again to the post below. I will edit this post I already made.
Ben-To knows it is insane, and it is pretty funny, but in no way whatsoever is it a "parody." It's just exceedingly shameless about itself. People often label anything that has "hey, this is a commonplace narrative convention, let's call attention to it as we do it" type dialogue as parodying that thing when in fact they're just dispensing with pretense. I Love Rampo Kitan!
Does it have some problems sure but the way I look at it is that it is a more focused and not insanely ambitious version of ungo swapping out the works of ango for rampo. if you cared for ungo or the first two episodes of rampo kitan you will like the series as a whole. episodes 6-8 are easily the weakest but even the one off comedy episode has an ok mystery and some fun jokes. There are two Yay just accept that this happened moments. the first one in the second episode is harder to accept since the other is a lot more common. First thing you need to understand about the series though is that it is not really a mystery series. It is a case study of psychopaths and what is justice and or law. Also Ben-to is a really funny parody I think. It knows it is insane and works it to it's advantage very well. |

I watched all of Rampo Kitan and thought the show was a big old mess. It kept breaking tone at awkward places. And the MacGuffin in the last half of the series was explained poorly or not really at all. spoiler[Seriously, just how does this "code" do anything? Every time they brought it up, it drove me nuts.]

Bojack Horseman is, on the whole, amazing. It certainly does have its up and down moments (ironically, if you consider the overarching theme of the show), but yea - watch it.
The show is not just for people who deal with depression, though those people will probably get special meaning from it. It is awesome for anyone though as long as you enjoy DEEP character development and character study. The show has a wonderful way of presenting Bojack as a character that you hate and then feel sorry for and then hate again. You don't see it in the first couple episodes, but gradually it kind of sucks you in and you start to care about him in the way you care about your family member who has a HORRIBLE addiction and you just want them to get clean. The writing is so intelligent and never really forces things with him. There is one particular episode in season one that was very powerful. You'll know it when you see it. Season two has some great episodes too, some of them are utterly hilarious. The episode with the game show was just comedy genius. Anyway, personally I think Bojack is one of the best animated shows I have seen in years. |

Imagine that, the people on this podcast talking about a woman on the 10 dollar bill and act like the majority of the candidates took the question seriously. Most said their wives and or a family member just to say they appreciate those people in their lives or as a joke. The moderator himself even said its not a serious question. But I guess just being biased and acting like they are experts or that the candidates "dont know" any important woman is just plain ignorant.
Otherwise, this is probably the most disappointing Supernerds episode. I saw Zac mention on twitter (and didn't take gracefully) the criticism that they dont sound interested or they sound bored on the podcast. And that person was right. I've listened to EVERY episode of this podcast and overtime, the energy level or just excitement in general has went way down comparatively. Instead of taking the criticism well, you got the whole "Man I guess Im just not acting wacky and playing sound effects" etc comments. It has NOTHING to do with that. It just sounds like you are trudging along doing this. On the other end of the spectrum, AWO has been around just as long and they do sound excited or at the very least interested in what they do when an episode is put out. Only reason why I stick around to listen to ANNcast anymore is the industry shows and the occasional guest. |

Tell me how you really feel. Here's the thing - I am not and have never been a high energy person. When you say we used to be excited and high-energy, it sounds to me like you must've been listening to a different show. It's hard for me to reconcile this - I took the criticism seriously and went back and listened to some older episodes. The big difference to me is I sound a lot less tired now than I did back then. I'm a much healthier person now and have a lot more energy for the show, I just don't sound excited because that isn't my natural speaking voice. You and a few others have told me now that I sound bored and disinterested - that's really frustrating to hear because I care about your feedback and would like to make you happy, but it's very far from a consensus opinion, and I go back and listen to myself on older shows and have no idea what you're referring to. The show has never been high energy - I am almost always very laid-back about it. To me it's just my natural speaking voice. |
