This is possibly my guilty pleasure of the year. I know it's dumb and full of boob/butt shots I usually don't like, but there's something different when it's done with likeable monster girls instead of sterotypical school girls. In the end, I just couldn't stop giggling at every scene. What I like of a series is that it is able to leave me with a smile in my face once it has ended, and MonMusu succeeded!

And onto more important points, Miia is best girl. Cool

Great review! I feel i'm in the same boat as you; I don't enjoy series that play these kind of tropes straight, but i enjoyed Monster Musume as an outrageous, absurd comedy. We'll probably be remembering this one for a while, lol (and i'd be shocked if we don't see more seasons in the future; i'm sure these discs are selling great)

If the jokes (are mostly) funny...this silly little comedy can't be this bad.

To amuse (some of the) ANN staff...I would suggest closing posts with a "best girl" line.

No doubt Rachnera is the best girl

I enjoyed it, it tried stay as close as possible to the original source material, manga chapter per-10-15 minutes of the show generally.

Near the end felt little rushed, but it wasn't like there was epic story arc.

The manga has progress way into the 40s since this was made, they could get away with second season.

However, i don't know if it would work in second season. New weirdness of the show would turn into more of the same from last time.

Good cheeky Rom-Comedy, that what is.

*High Five* Centorea, Suu, and Rachnera are my other favorites!

I agree what makes Mon Mus so fun besides the wacky monster related hijinks is the fact all the women (1st off none of the girls are in flipping high school and appear, for the most part, in their 20s) are very likable. They don't need tragic backstories or forced cuteness to get their distinct personality across and they all have health libidos for Kurusu.

One of my favorite scenes is where dehydrated Suu is about to "jump" Miia at the park and Miia points out there was a faucet right over there but, we all know that's not what really matters. Wink
It's very self-aware without going on and on about how "clever" it is. Not a game changer but, I don't consider it a guilty pleasure. I felt no guilt watching except for any Papi ecchi scenes because those were very awkward/creepy for me.

So it wasn't me that first said it.

Monster Musume is the Best anime of the Season!

Like I said previously IT has A Great protagonist with good character traits. Has Talent and a good heart. + He's not a bitch, Completely aware of the girls feelings, Not a F'Ing High school student!

All the girls are interesting and likeable. They all have their own personalities that make them standout that makes them unique. Plus none of them are in F'Ing high school. Plus none are a quote on quote childhood friend like other series try the force into the story.

Plus the series is not fanservices focused or forced (Yes it there but it's not super distracting.) EX: There aren't 9000 random bathroom scenes, clothes changing scenes, Upskirt shots, Trips to hot springs or unnecessary Shower scenes.

The Story and Comedy are very interesting and Very Entertaining. How many harem anime/manga can you say that use this formula that Monster Musume does. Not Counting Actually, I Am and Overload.

With the hype surrounding the manga for this one, I was looking forward to this show. As with all the shows I check out, I gave it the 3 episode rule. That was as far as I got into this one.

Thought the first episode was great, Miia's antics had me laughing. But, once the focus shifted to introducing a few of the other girls in episodes 2 and 3, my interest disappeared.

The comedy centered around Centorea and Papi didn't do much for me. The slime girl's (name escapes me) introduction didn't interest me either. I was actually falling asleep during the 3rd episode, that's how little I felt engaged by what I was watching.

I think the only times I laughed during the 2nd and 3rd episodes were when we'd see a jealous Miia, when they revealed that riding Centorea was akin to proposing, and when Papi and the slime girl were playing on the Wii. Nothing else worked for me.

As for the main character, I didn't mind him. Though, I was disappointed to see that he did have something in common with many male harem leads...and it is a trait I don't like seeing. Guy was a bit of a doormat. Moreso when it came to the agent character dumping another girl on him, when he clearly doesn't want it to happen.

Mon Musu is an interesting series to dissect and compare to other harem series. For one thing, it avoids the oddly chaste stance most series take. Sure, they're supposedly full of fanservice, but it's a weird, contradictory, prudish concept of it. Mon Musu kicks that right in the head by making it clear that it's sex-positive, even if a lot of the women are weirdly forthcoming with their feelings. But it's completely logical since this is what happens when you have raging hormones abound. It also avoids other pitfalls like making it clear WHY the girls are attracted to the male lead as well as telling all that sappy drama I've seen torpedo other series to go shove it. Plus the gimmick of the girls being non-humans adds an extra layer of commentary, interracial relationships being the big one, as well as giving creative gags.

All in all, a fun series that I hope gets a second season.

Clearly Lala is the best girl. Followed by Papi.

I followed for six episodes (until [s]SpiderGirl[/s] Arachne was introduced, don't remember the name), and I wasn't able to see far from the "not so" fanservice. Besides, I fail to see where is the difference between a MC almost killed by a zelous girl for assumed peeping or for a too friendly lamia. To each its own, I guess.

I liked the Smith-san part of the show, though.

Well, I find that Miia is the best girl. I remember reading on some ANN thread where someone posted that they could see, if a dub does happen, Brittney Karbowski dubbing Miia. I agree. Brittney has done a number of spunky/tsundere roles and I think Miia falls under that.

This was indeed a comedy series. I only watched it because the OP and ED drew me in. The girls' antics were funny as well. I especially like Smith and the MON Squad. A poster stated above that Darling and the others were not high-school age. Well, that clears up a few things for me. I'd wondered why they weren't going to school as they all seemed to be school age.

Based on this review I imagine I will not enjoy this series once I get around to watching it.

One thing I'd like to point out is the whole unconsensual thing doesn't seem right. If you are talking about the main character and the girls that is. From what I've seen many of the girls (if not all of them) unconsensually force themselves on the "generic male" character at one point. Milia's antics of nearly strangling him to death and going "teehee" don't feel all that different from a good old tsundere punching the main character for no reason. The character seems to get abused physically and sexually for comedic sake and that's it. He might have more of a spine than Rito from "To Love Ru" but that's not saying much when the point of his character is largely the same.

I'm rather disappointed that the anime didn't try to play up some political angles. Instead we get some arbitrary rule that prohibits sexual intercourse between the species for the simple fact it keeps the anime from going into the "H zone". There is literally no other logical reason for it. Maybe if the show was leading UP to that point when the ban was broken due to the actions of the characters I'd understand and be less apprehensive about giving it a shot. Doesn't seem to be the case here.

Personally I prefer ecchi anime that gives me a reason to stick around besides all the sexualized humor. That's why I can still enjoy something like High School DxD. Plenty of fanservice but has very good world building that constantly makes me want to know about it's lore and what challenges will come to the characters.

I don't expect the show to become the next "Monster Girl Quest" but damn it don't just use this unique setting for comedic sake! I want to know more about these creatures and their cultures. NOT who's next to harass the no name protagonist Evil or Very Mad

When will there ever be an actual anime centered on legendary and mythical creatures, I belive there are some unexplored territories out there that people just don't know about. I got angry and irritated when I heard of this anime, I mean there are things that have purposes and monsters of myths are not ment for harem shows with fanservice.(an insult to the ancient world). Although I am glad that I am starting to see more of mythical creatures in anime, this just may be the beginning. I hope that one day there will be an epic anime based on mythical creatures accurately.
