To continue with the comparisons to other big visual novel Kickstarters, the Muv-Luv campaign has already passed Grisaia, which reveived $475,256 during its 47 days. Also, as at the moment I write this post there is $525,742 pledged, Muv-Luv needs less than $16,000 to reach Clannad, which gained $541,162 in 60 days. As there are still 31 days to go, it is quite safe to say that Muv-Luv will be the biggest visual novel Kickstarter.

Still, I am a bit more pessimistic about reaching the final stretch goal (which is $720,000, and not $750,000 like the article states) than some people seem to be.

Highest overall grossing, yes. If you stack in hundreds of models at hundreds of dollars each, you'll get more money. In terms of just backers though Clannad still has a couple thousand more than Muv Luv I believe. It is rather impressive that so people are buying the Muv Luv swag though, so that amounts to something.

That is true, and that is kind of the reason for my pessimism. As everyone in these circles has heard of Clannad, it might be difficult to reach the number of backers it got. Also, during the second half of the campaign, the backers might consist more of people who pledge less than the superfans at the beginning of the Kickstarter (I don't have much data to support this, but the money per backer has decreased during the campaign).

To be fair, the Muv Luv swag is pretty neat compared to the stuff Grisaia and Clannad were restricted to. It also helps a lot that the $150 goal includes any stretch goal items, which means that it's a good value with the extra Vita/Android copy and will become an even better value once the codex and photon games stretch goal are reached. I'm personally getting the $200 tier because of the plushie and am very tempted to go to $300 for the TSF.

Anyways, I think it's still likely to get more backers than Clannad by the end, not because it's more popular, but because the KS rewards are so neat. Also, Clannad had much lower stretch goals than Muv-Luv and wasn't really able to generate hype after a certain point. It went almost 200,000 over the final stretch goal.

I think it's indeed valid and interesting to compare the Clannad and Muv-Luv kickstarters, because Clannad was so well known from the anime (After Story was, for a time, #1 on the ANN encyclopedia rankings) while Muv-Luv has no anime adaptation and is little known here. I was greatly concerned when they set their initial goal well above Clannad's, and was surprised they met it so easily.

Mr. Nescio is probably right that we'll see some lower-tier backers come in as the campaign progresses, getting in for just a Steam key or even just the $1 access to BackerKit. But still, it's pretty amazing that Muv-Luv is currently sporting an average pledge of $160 according to Kicktraq, far above Clannad ($93), and Grisaia ($109). Credit is due both to the franchise and to what seems to be a very well-run Kickstarter campaign (also notice that if you so much as touch the Muv-Luv KS page, you'll get Facebook ads for it for a week!)

CLANNAD got more backers because it's way more popular and known around several communities for obvious reasons.
MuvLuv fans are part of a more hardcore audience and their backers are willing to send their money because the tiers are well spread and they do have their value (signed physical copies, model figures, swag, etc). Also, because it's two games, they were already expecting a $60-$100 price tag for both.
The long Prefundia also allowed the interested people to financially prepare for the KS. It was also very useful for Degica, as their initial plan was pretty bad and almost all the concerns we had were addressed very quickly thanks to the really good communication they showed.
Just today people were complaining that the VITA version was made available only for the $150 tier. They responded in a few hours that they will be preparing a $60 add-on for those interested only in the VITA release of the two games.

The KS needs $6.2k to be pledged in every remaining day from now. That's very doable if you look at the daily data so far:

Started around $300.

I'd be curious how much came out of Japan for the sake of the ports, it's been significantly promoted on that side.
