So is this DTS 5.1 just for the dubs? I already have all of RahXephon, but I don't have an HDTV and since I can't stand any of their dubbing, I just don't feel like repurchasing it. Although, I don't have Noir or FMP! yet, so if the price is right, I may get the new versions of those instead
 .

You might want to double check that press release. It doesn't say the WMV HD and DTS 5.1 will be on the same DVD, but the news post on the main page seems to indicate otherwise.

I'm not sure where you are getting that assumption, especially considering that, to my knowledge, Blu-Ray won't be available here until late next year. Also, Microsoft has thrown it's support into the HD-DVD camp, which is a factor since we are talking about WMV files. And of course, there is the fact that Blu-Ray already supports HD without having to use WMV-HD. I'm also not sure how successful this venture can be, since to make it worth buying you would either need a monitor or TV capable of displaying HDTV, and a player that is fairly new (and I believe mid to high price range) that can decode WMV-HD. There are a few discs already out in WMV-HD.. I wonder how well they are selling. |

I aint buying any of these cus they have WMV video on them.
Sorry ADV but siding with MS is a bad idea in my book. |

I don't think they're siding with Microsoft. They're just using their technology. It'd be like a company using Windows XP instead of OSX. That doesn't mean they're siding with Microsoft, does it? It's just technology. |

I got the impression that the first DVD will be a non-spec compliant DVD containing WMV HD video and WMA Pro sound and will only be playable on a PC or Windows Media compatible player and the second DVD will contain normal video and both a 5.1 surround and DTS track.

Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD support WMV-HD playback as part of their official spec on either standard DVD media or the high capacity

Do we really need DTS for regular anime? DTS ought to be reserved for movies (this includes anime movies).
5.1 Dolby Digital is sufficient enough for regular anime series. It would be nice if that since they did the english dub in 5.1DD, that they would do that Japanese in 5.1DD like they have with ROD the TV and Ghost in the Shell and the Platinum edition of Neon Genesis Evangelion. |

But weren't the Japanese soundtracks made in Japan. I believe I asked this same question before, and the answer lies in the Japanese production companies. Whatever we get on the DVDs in terms of Japanese audio is straight from Japan, unless they end up re-releasing it in a better format, and then the U.S. decides to do the same, as with Eva Platinum. All ADV can do in terms of this situation is only for the dub, since they have the resources to create them right now, if they wanted. So after saying that, I guess I answered my own initial question about these DTS tracks being dub only. If that's the case, then I suppose I won't be getting them then  (assuming it would end up costing more).

That is true, but my point is that MS officially supports HD-DVD not Blu-Ray. In any case, since we are no doubt speaking of standard DVD-9 when it comes to what ADV will be releasing, the point is rather moot. |

Is it just me, or is it WAY to early for another format. I am not to sure, but DVD's aren't THAT old, and I don't know how much higher quality you can get in an anime series than a DVD and 5.1 sound to be honest. There is a difference between live-action and animation, I just don't think the quality can be noticably higher, at least not in terms of the difference from VHS to DVD. Seems like a large waste of time and money, hopefully these new formats go the way of the dodo and everyone just sticks with DVDs for another 5-10 years.

Except that the technology in question (WMV) is technically inferior to other options (like a generic MPEG-4 - not MSMPEG-4, which is worthless). Using WMV also places very real limits on who can and can not watch the DVD (contrary to popular belief in Redmond, not everyone uses Windows - or wants to). Plus, WMV is a very inflexible container, among a host of other technical issues. It also support DRM, which I personally hold against WMV, although ADV would likely disagree. |

Why not? The Japanese use it more and more frequently as of late it's becoming apparent. They've been creating DTS 5.1 tracks just for rental versions of their series in order to get people to both rent and buy their DVD releases after they air on TV. This is why we've gotten DTS tracks for shows like Gungrave and Samurai Champloo lately. |
