*yawn* no BL artists no buy. Would have been better if it was jpn artists. Western artstyle has gotten worst and worster every year.

So excited for this honestly, spawning from the fact the announcement ISN'T about a live-action Hollywood movie and also the fact that a lot of these artists are quite well-known.

This is pretty cool. I wasn't really expecting anything big - there's no way Kodansha and Isayama would ever let the American publisher announce something big at an American convention - but it's still interesting. They got a lot of great artists working on this, and a lot of them are getting really big in the industry right now. I'll definitely be picking this up.

I'm not a big American comics reader, but I'm buying this since it's good to see well-known comic artists and writer play around with a popular Japanese comic book. Anything that brings manga into the mainstream of comics is a good thing.

This will be the ultimate test to see if Western comics fans will ever be receptive to Japanese comics. I'm interested to see if that gap can ever be bridged in a meaningful way. If it doesn't happen with well-known American artists working on the JP comic with the most mainstream global appeal in decades, then it'll never happen.

I've not kept up with the Attack on Titan manga, but if this does have original stories (without much knowledge of the series required), I'll probably buy it.

You take that back! I will agree American comics have a lot to learn from Japanese comics but there still is some great American art out there today.

Cameron Stewart, "Micael" Avon Oeming, Gail Simone, Scott Snyder and Paolo Rivera are gods among men but the selection and the comic´s that are credited to them leave something to be desired. No Mike Mignola? Really? Maybe in Vol. 2 but the Avengers crossover was trash.

His name is is Michael Avon Oeming btw dear ANN... (and Powers is his biggest work).

Seems it's just coming full circle, since Attack on Titan also incorporates some American sensibilities thru a Japanese prism.

  • The show’s international success is certainly a happy development for Wit Studio, but the animation staff didn’t necessarily set out with that as its goal, and instead went with the choices that they, as people born and raised in Japan, felt would be interesting or entertaining. Wada does acknowledge that the team’s subconscious influences may have been at play, though. “Since we were kids, we’ve naturally consumed a lot of American entertainment, and I think part of the show’s global international acceptance comes from reflecting those sensibilities through a uniquely Japanese prism.”

This could be interesting. A lot of earlier "Ameri-manga" type efforts showed only a superficial understanding of manga, like doing a conventional Wolverine story, but set in Japan and with speed lines. Fully fixating Western creators in the Attack on Titan universe could turn up some interesting efforts. Let's hope for good things.

Isn't a successful US manga industry and manga doing well on those book sales charts that are posted here like every week proof that the US is already like this?

I thought we, as a community, where over this childish notion that the Japanese comic industry is somehow inherently superior to the rest of the globes. This project is to be admired, and I hope it inspires more to come.
Let me name you some artists (and writers) who are on par, if not surpass, the Japanese greats.

Stan Sakai, Sergio Aragones, Simon Coleby, Patrick Goddard, Simon Fraser

I could continue but frankly I think your positively offensive (to the readership, publishers, and indeed the hard working creators at large both big and small) post speaks for itself.
