I can vouch Fumoffu works just fine on its own, since I watched it first. Yes, a bunch of stuff isn't explained, but the show is so ridiculous, that you just sort of roll with it. Watching Full Metal Panic afterwards though was a let down. For a show about a school girl getting a mecha/gun otaku super soldier bodyguard, it takes itself way too seriously imo. There was also rather distracting fanservice, and an absolutely terribad translation (at least on hulu) riddled with outright errors that made some parts near incomprehensible. I hope are least the DVD/bluray releases had better translations.

I dropped the FMP anime a few episodes in because I'd already read the manga, and felt that one had much better comedy and didn't take itself toO seriously. I hadn't considered Fumoffu to be stand-alone enough to work even if I didn't finish the anime, but I guess I'll give it a chance now.

Ouch. I did not expect Argevollen to be destroyed with such harsh criticism. Yes, it has almost no originality, but I found most of the "good" guys likable. When I think about bad anime, Argevollen to me is no where near them; bad anime to me are usually run of the mill, badly animated ecchi shows.

But do not worry Sentai, I will pick up both parts of Argevolleen on BD in glorious bare bones presentation and 12 episodes on a single disc. Very Happy

No, my dear reviewer, Argevollen does not improve in the 2nd half. I dare say it gets worse. The animation at least takes a huge hit, probably because they were out of money and realized they weren't going to sell anything. I don't usually drop anime, but this I dropped. Not because it was bad, but because it was ungodly boring.

IMHO you kind of have to treat Fumofuu as it's own separate entity. Despite the comedic moments FMP season 1 was mostly a serious drama. The comedy was obviously not the main point of the show. Then you have Fumofuu. Then after it you have The Second Raid which goes back to the serious story like in season 1. So you have serious, comedy, serious. For most people if you don't treat Fumofuu as it's own little entity you'll probably be wondering wth is going on with the mood changes like some bi-polar ex-gf.

Argevollen was so boring and dumb. I dropped it about 9 episodes in when it was simulcasting. There were obvious signs it was gonna turn out bland, but it didn't even feel like it tried. The characters went through these prescribed motions with barely a hint of real emotion. And, despite having a large named cast, the writers sure didn't go out of their way to develop them.

Plus the light-beams and the orgasmic massage session felt out of place. Besides those moments, the series was really PG.

I was confused when I learned it was 2 cour. It didn't stand out at all; why pump that money into Argevollen of all things? Lo and behold, the sales were dismal.

you cant be surprised on how much argevollen got smashed in the reviews. after watching aldnoah zero which was a good series ,but have a very very questionable ending, this series was way too familiar with zero. however this series' ending is better and more satisfactory than zero's which i think it should at least be on the rental instead of the perishable.

I'd say it's more like:

Gonzo's two cour original series; Action and comedy in equal parts.
Kyoto Animation's first attempt; comedy.
Kyoto Animation's second Raid, I mean, attempt; action.

Fumofuu was the only one that I couldn't finish. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't FMP which by its structure is the essence of compelling serial storytelling- with the occasional comedy one shots breathers it so it doesn't get too bleak. Or thrilling or unbelievable.

I have the first one with no need to touch the two later series. I can get comedy from comedy series; I don't need a good mech series to drop the mechs for a cheap laugh. Second Raid was too grim, almost like KA was overcompensating for the previous series. "You think it had too much comedy? Ok, how about if we took it all out?"

I would definitely call Fumoffu a spin-off as the events it portrays are never referred to or shown to have any effect on the main storyline.

Personally, I couldn't stand Fumoffu. It's just not my kind of humor. I can understand how other people enjoy it, but the whole mascot thing doesn't do anything for me at all. I own FMP and FMP: Second Raid. I'll never own Fumoffu.

As for Argevollen... it wasn't a really good show, but I didn't find it terrible, either. I do think it had the potential to be much better than it actually was, both from a strategic/tactical level and from a personal/character-driven angle. I could sort of see where they were *trying* to go -- a realistic world and war within the context of mechas and the like -- but that's a hard thing to pull off. Ghost in the Shell has managed to do that, but most other shows that try that end up face-planting themselves.

At any rate, it was a decent enough show to watch -- once. That's about it, though.

I watched Fumoffu first before I even got into the main series. They were showing it at my old anime club in high school one day. Unless you know the characters somewhat it is kinda hard to follow but since I started at the rugby episode (which has to be the best laugh I've ever had) it was semi-easy to get what was going on. Though, I'd still watch the first series before going into this one since you'll be lost in this series.

Funny you mention that. There's a FMP event in 4 days where Shoji Gatoh will make a special announcement regarding the franchise. I'm surprised ANN hasn't made an article on it since there was a magazine article that came out about a month ago. Basically he and his editors are hyping up the announcement saying it will make crying FMP fans rejoice and Gatoh himself said. "Can I really make an announcement that won't betray the expectations of the fans?" A lot of hardcore teasing going on.

Having read the LNs and the Sigma manga i can say that TSR's grimness is the result of the source material and not KA. If anything TSR had more comedy than the volume it adapted. Though personally I never found it that grim.

Fumoffu from what I remember is an adaptation of short stories that were no included in the LNs and maybe some original material by KA.

Personally I think the writing in Fumoffu and TSR were both superior to the first season (not saying it was bad) though I don't know whether to blame Gonzo or the source material for this.

Ooh nice.

Make it so Gatoh. It's a good time for a new season.
