Actually my taste differs vastly LOL but it's okay right.

I've started with Seed and too lazy to watch the older shows, except Wing because of *cough* bishounen.

Maybe I should start watching the other older shows, using this review as some sort of guideline.

Thanks for writing this.

"Char's Counterattack" - "With an unlikeable protagonist..."
not sure if the author is referring to Amuro or Char...either way it certainly sounds like a sizable portion of UC fanbase will like to have a few words with the author.

Though I agree that CCA is not kind to anyone who is not invested in the Amuro-Char rivalry.

A good read nevertheless.

So I have been jamming A LOT of Gundam down my throat these past few months. My friend who is a big Gundam fan and has watched nearly everything has been guiding me down the Gundam path. I'm in the middle of Gundam X and the Zeta movies now, not to mention I'm watching Iron Blood Orphans week to week. As a person who likes craziness, bad dubs, and Super Robots (Mazinger style) I adore Mobile Fighter G Gundam.

Pro Tip: never watch the Turn A Gundam movies, its a mess of a recap.

Why: Poorly received due to the way it converts the dark drama of Zeta into hollow comedy in an effort to lighten the mood. Not available in outside of Japan, so it isn't a problem

But it was on Daisuki and it is coming in BD soon.
Checking the facts before making such was too hard? Though considering you though G-Reco was confusing I'm not surprised that a quick google search was too much for you. Rolling Eyes

And why recommend Unicorn at all but not ZZ and CCA when they're both required in order to even follow it?

Geez, if half the series isn't recommended to watch, what's even the point? There's no way someone shouldn't watch 00, Wing, ZZ, or Victory (all important parts of the Gundam universe, and some of the most notable), but SEED gets a 'maybe'.

SEED.

More recommended to watch than 00.

Come on now.

Lots of folks doing Gundam primers these days. Probably due to the influx of titles coming over here thanks to Right Stuf and Daisuki.

The one thing I would object to in this particular guide, aside from its lack of thoroughness, is the depiction of Gundam F91 as not worth watching. Granted, it's a truncated version of what was originally planned to be a TV series, but the visuals are crisp, the action is exciting, and some of the political underpinnings are interesting, too. It just feels "incomplete". Because, well, it is.

Also, I think Gundam 00 is far more worth a viewer's time than SEED.

LOL. I seem have completely different tastes in Gundam shows than the author. "No"s to all of the Gundams I like (Wing, SEED, and 00). I even didn't hate SEED: Destiny, though I agree that the second season of 00 did fall off the rails, but I still found it watchable. I actually rewatched Wing a few years ago and thought it had help up pretty well. I haven't watched G Reconquista, though it's in my Hulu list, and I am currently enjoying Iron Blooded Orphan. I tried to watch the original series once years ago but just couldn't get into it at all.

This is easily the most helpful article i've ever read on ANN; thanks a bunch! My first gundam series is Iron Blood Orphans, which i'm following now. Whenever i've tried to look up Gundam watch-lists, i get directed to some forum post where a Gundam die-hard simply listed every Gundam to have ever animed, which is more than i'm prepared to handle, lol.

If I can ever find those Mobile Gundam Origin compilation films streaming legally anywhere, i'll check them out immediately.

(I hope you don't get too much flack from the Gundam die-hards; I enjoyed the article very much and everyone is entitled to their own opinion Very Happy)

First, I guess I should answer the questions at the bottom:

1 - Gundam Wing; episode 2 in particular
2 - If I were a newer fan, I guess, I'd start with Mobile Suit Gundam 00.

I'm incredibly impressed with such a thorough entry on Gundam being produced here. It's comprehensive to a "T" - though you missed all the other terrible Gundam movie compilations! - and I'll probably recommend this at my Gundam panels. I have my own personal feelings about some of the series you recommended "yes" or "no" on but art is subjective so I'm not going to whine about where I disagree; I'm a big proponent of Gundam 00 despite the weaker season two and the controversial film, for example.

I would like to mention a few important clarifications for the Universal Century, however:

1 - Gundam: The Origin is set in an alternate Universal Century timeline. It tells the origin of Char and Zeon and such but changes around the technology stuff so it's considered a-canonical from the later series.
2 - It's probably important to note that the entire regular Universal Century canon is based off the actions and mecha of the Mobile Suit Gundam compilation films rather than the series. The movies removed some lingering super robot-y stuff they wanted to clean up.
3 - There is another series of Mobile Suit Gundam: IGLOO but it was never released. It tells about Federation stuff and still looks kind of weird to me just like the first.
4 - Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam would be incredible to animate though it might be another alternate timeline thing if it did get made as that manga isn't canonical according to Sunrise.
5 - Mobile Suit Victory Gundam most definitely takes place in the Universal Century; I've personally never heard of criticism about this. I haven't seen it myself but I can assure you that it builds upon the politics and technology seen in both Unicorn and F91. You even see old mobile suits and ships from previous series flying around at different points. The Zanscare Empire is just like the Crossbone Vanguard from F91; they are just a colony group that renamed itself and turned militaristic.

These are minor nitpicks, I know, but I feel these are important for helping this excellent entry become even better. Major props to Ms. Orsini for the editorial!

My first Gundam series were Gundam Reconguista in G and Gundam Build Fighters TRY. while simultaneously watching the first episode of Mobile Suite Gundam: The Origin. Nowadays, I am watching Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. Out of all of these,, I loved everyone but one: CURSE G-RECO!!!

I intend to watch the absolute majority of these shows.

G-RECO WAS CONFUSING!!! Plot-holes, lack of development, and the ending... What Was That? I saw better writing in M3: That Dark Metal or Mahouka, and none of these is a complement to either mentioned show.

Mixed bag with the few Gundam shows I've watched. The first being Wing, which I just hated when it was airing, and made me ignored the franchise for a number of years. The Origin manga is what got me to give the franchise another chance.

Mobile Suit Gundam - It was a fine watch, but it's too damn tedious to watch again. Didn't like the pacing, too many toy moments, and the fights got extremely and tedious(didn't need to have a fight every episode). Also it attempts at romance were hilarious.

08th MS Team - Thought it was okay, but I can't see myself watching it again. The extremely forced romance ruined the show for me,along with it having generic evil bad guy.Loved how they grounded it somewhat to reality with the fights.

Zeta Gundam - Couldn't finish it. The pacing,on top of Kamille being just an awful protagonist, made me quit halfway through.

I'm just glad G Gundam at least got a "maybe." Although I should say it's worth watching for this man alone:
