It's interesting that part of what made gundam so revolutionary is that it tried to be more grounded in reality just to turn around and introduce all the mysticism with the newtype. As a result I found the first part feel really repetitive and the second part disappointing. But I didn't watch it when it came out, so I'm probably not the target audience.

I enjoyed watching the show,but I can see myself watching it again. It becomes so tedious,especially the fights which go into the "had to give them something to do" territory. The second half is defintily better,since it actually moves much faster,despite a lot of poorly written moments(Sleggar and Mirai fall in love for some reason).

After reading the translated portions of "Japanese Animation Guide: The History of Robot Anime", I'm not so sure how "revolutionary" Gundam should be considered. Ryusuke Hikawa makes it clear the super-robot thing was wearing thin and doing a more straightforward sci-fi war story isn't a stroke of genius as a new direction. It's a perfectly serviceable idea and I think the results are pretty good, but I think this series is sometimes held in a false reverence.
Aside from being a bit janky in some technical aspects it compares poorly to the movie versions and the much-later Gundam: The Origin manga version, which gives much-needed fleshing out to a lot of the cast and tweaks some plot events so they make more sense. Tomino's own Zambot 3 (1977) was very much in the super-robot mold but the subject matter got pretty dark, especially towards the end. |

That seems to be a recurring problem with a lot of these old 16 mm shows and I found that in some cases, like for Galaxy Express or Saint Seiya, I actually prefer the old DVDs to the current blurays. Sure, the new transfer may look a great deal sharper, but a lot of detail in the drawings just get lost. Seems like mostly only the TMS shows which were done in 35 mm like Cobra are worth the update. |

In Galaxy Express 999's and Saint Seiya's cases, the reason why the BDs actually look worse than the DVDs is the fact that they were upscaled from SD masters before any filters were applied. Not only there's no gain in detail compared to the DVDs, but some of the background art's texture was lost to excessive DNR. Gundam fared much better because it actually got a new HD telecine from the 16mm film masters, so even with all the excessive DNR, the BDs still look a good deal more detailed than the DVDs. The story is more of a B+ as The Origin manga / the novel trilogy trump it and the filler segments is palpable too. The rushed ending though works like a dream. Gundam 0079 is still undeniably a classic and a must for every proper scholar of anime and isn´t it funny how the only well written parts of SEED were the sequences where it ripped of the old scripts one to one.
If making a Fukuda product look good by sheer association isn´t the definition of writing that stood the test of time than i don´t know what is. On to Zeta! (The 2nd The Origin OVA was even better than the first if anyone cares.) |

Ugh, we're still missing an episode? The order page says nothing about missing an episode, so I'd be pretty mad if I had ordered this yet.
Looks like my R2 DVD box sets are still not getting a US replacement...

The episode in question has been barred by Tomino from release anywhere, which is why it was not on the BEI set, and not on ours. I fought for this when we got started and received a resounding "no" and a polite push to not continue to ask. While I apologize it's not included, there was absolutely nothing I can do. Blame Tomino. |

It's not even a bad episode. Maybe parts of it are ugly, but plenty of this series is ugly. |

I love Mobile Suit Gundam. It's one of my favorite anime TV series (though I tend to prefer the movie trilogy). It's more than just the innovation of its form that interests me about it, though. When I first saw the series, I'd already been inundated by its successors, so it was nothing that new. What I love about it is that the characters have so much presence, even if there's not a lot of depth (and there usually is in this show). It's something a lot of the more modern mecha shows, even in this franchise, are missing. Characters can come and go without making an impression in new Gundam. But characters like Char Aznable, Bright Noa, Garma Zabi, Kai Shiden, Ramba Ral, Crowley Hamon, etc, all exude personality from cel to cel, both in how they're drawn and written. And Tomino has this immense talent for world building that people often play down because of some of his awkward writing.
It's a real classic. Everybody should watch the full TV series at least once. |

and here I only finally got my 2nd DVD version collection back in the summer. Though I will surely pick this up from a mere collector's standpoint.
I always use an anime fan's willingness to watch a few old things as a litmus test to their care for anime as a whole, as compared to just happening to like shows that were anime. |

Amazing how Tomino STILL doesn't allow us to see a certain episode.Well,I won't allow him to see my money either,plus I can still watch the episode if I want to...
But the Movie Trilogy?Now that I'm buying it in Blu-Ray with a smile in the face. |
