Overall (dub) : B-
Overall (sub) : C+

I guess the opposite, isn't it?

but the striking cast, editing style, and musical score haven't changed at all since its halcyon days

Actually, the music quite disappoints me for that reason: Most of the themes are from the previous score, the new ones are very lazy meant-to-be-serviceable musics that don't help too much, and the old ones, with this clunky and not thought-out editing makes it seem just music pasted out on scenes, so you notice it more, and you start memorizing every single soundtrack they use, and it becomes highly distracting when you are watching and suddenly "oh, they put this song now". And I really liked its use in the first season, but here it breaks my inmersion =/

Sadly, the vocal direction has taken a turn for the worse...

Yeah, I heard about that. I actually didn't think the first season dub was bad, so I was excited to see this season dubbed too, but I don't know if I can do it Sad I'm glad Alex Von David took over as ADR Director for The (better) Second Arc. Also, Kari Wahlgren is one of the best, so it doesn't surprise me that she still sounds great, even under bad vocal direction Smile

Yeah, even as a diehard DRRR fan this first cour was er, not stellar. It just kinda got really dull in it's direction making it kinda hard to care. Thankfully, as the review says, it's still based on source material with characters and story that HASN'T lost it's charm? So being as invested as I am in the characters at this point, just seeing their interactions is all it really ever needed to get my attention. Also, doesn't help that this volume covers what I felt was the weakest part of Shou, mainly the parts without spoiler[Mikado's spiral into insanity]

Thankfully, as other have said The Second Arc improved on this a ton, and I'd say at least in my opinion can definitely stand toe-to-toe with Season 1. Hopefully Ketsu will be able to be more like that then this, and send Durarara off with a bang.

So I guess its safe to say that the broadcast dub wasn't the best idea for the series.

Good review, Hope. The 2nd season seemed completely overconfident in its quest to both inform and entertain. ANN episode reviews helped quite a bit figuring out who did what to who(m) because I was lost half the time keeping track of the storyline.

Dub and Sub scores were accidentally reversed, it's been fixed now.

While I love this show and all I do agree with her review that these six episode are kind of "eh", because nothing really starts to happen until after this arc is over. And I hate that Aniplex skimped their episode count from nine episodes a set to six.

The problem wasn't that it was a broadcast dub, the problem was the change in voice directors...

...which could've happened as a result of it being a broadcast dub, now that I think about it. Why they didn't notify the original director first is a mystery to me.

At least we have a better one with the 2nd cour.

I still find it kinda weird that episode 4.5 is released with the second set instead of the first.

I loved the dub for the first Durarara, is this one's really that bad?

I love the dub for both seasons, not THAT different.

The first switch happened because the original ADR Director Kristi Reed doesn't direct anime these days and has mainly been handling western animation voice work for Bang Zoom. Not sure why they switched ADR directors for the latest cour though, but it sounds a whole lot better so can't complain.

Legitimately curious: Has ANN ever ranked a dub higher than a sub before?

I can't remember the exact titles but I'm pretty sure I've seen it happen a few times here, its just not common.
