Great review of a good show. I can still remember watching that 'final performance' episode as the show was airing, during my last summer before starting college, and how real to life the emotions it conveyed felt to me. There is plenty to like in this show; in some sense, it almost feels like the understated way the show attaches you to the characters is what makes the higher-aiming emotional punches work so well. They come out of nowhere, and you might even find yourself surprised by how strongly it turns out you cared all along.

I also like the discussion of the setting as a character here a lot. It seems to be a hallmark of really good slice of life shows that the world they are in feels like it changes and exists in its own right, alongside the actual characters. Aria does this with Neo-Venezia in a really obvious but wonderfully executed way, especially since the characters' jobs are to show off the city in the first place. Non Non Biyori also does it with its much less out-there but still rather unique countryside setting that has its own special places I can clearly remember, from larger sets like the school and rice fields to smaller ones like the bus stop. K-ON! proves that it doesn't even need to be an inherently standout or interesting place for it to work on that level, though; their school is pretty straightforwardly a Japanese high school, but it manages to stick out in my mind in many ways, like the stairs and the statue mentioned in the review. Most school-for-school's-sake shows don't make that effort, but K-ON! is ahead of the curve.

This is an excellent review.
Of course I could be saying that just because I agree with it completely.Wink

K-On! is one of my favorite shows of any type, and definitely at the top of my list of "feel good" shows. I got a bit choked up just now from reading the review and remembering the scenes.

And I do agree with the negative aspect of the songs in Japanese being a jarring contrast to the dialog. I wish that Bandai, and then Sentai, had dubbed the songs, like Bandai did with the "Live Alive" episode of Haruhi.
I would probably still listen to the original songs outside of the show, which is what I do with the Haruhi songs, but it would be nice to have the girls singing in English in the dub.

But that is a minor issue for me because I still love the songs. I have all of the HTT songs on my MP3 player and listen to them frequently.

They did dub the season one songs, they just didn't incorporate them. And then Sentai didn't get them from the Bandai DVDs.

Why didn't they? Because they're not song well in the Japanese so they're not sung well in English because they're not supposed to be professional singers. But English speakers'd notice it more in English... except for "Sky High" from the movie, that comes through in any language.

As for the review: Title, Season 2 Part one. It's uh, yeah, not the whole thing.

If you look at the top of the review it says it is for both sets.

If you look at the top of the review it says it is for both sets.

It also talks about the end of the show, so it is obviously the review of the whole season.
The only place that I see "Part 1" is in the title of the web page. It is not in the title of the article.
EDIT: It looks like I am wrong about that and I might owe Animegomaniac an apology.
The cover image in the article is for part 1 and the link to release information is for part 1 only. I cannot find a complete season 2 release on Amazon.com or Right Stuf.
Now I am wondering what is being reviewed. Is it just the part 1 and part 2 sets, which were reviewed individually 3 years ago, being reviewed together?

As for the idea that the songs are not supposed to be sung well, they sound great to me. It is true that the girls are not professionals, but they are supposed to be good, and in my opinion they are good. Very good.

So many people whose opinion and taste I respect are into K-ON, but whenever I've tried to watch, I can never get past 10,15 minutes of it without wanting to poke my eyes out. I guess there's only so much fluffy-fluffy I can take.

It really is an excellent show. Watching both seasons (and the movie) in short succession makes the transition from being about Yui trying to fit in to being about Azusa getting left behind all the more apparent. But although season 2 and the movie end at about the same place, the movie does a good job of turning sad farewells to departing classmates into something a little more hopeful.

Despite disagreeing with some points and the grade for the show, I really liked the review here. Very thought out and broad, but still providing some slight specifics on why each point should be considered.

This review seems a tad late (I got these blu rays two Christmases ago) but besides that I agree with the review completely. K-On! is one of my favorite anime of all time, if not my favorite. Its sweet, funny, fluffy, the last episodes emotional without being depressing, and the animation is gorgeous ( maybe too good, especially now that I have watched many more anime). For a music-oriented series the soundtrack isn't that amazing, but its pleasant enough, and the ost melodies and HTT songs are catchy.

What a wonderful, well-deserved review. K-On! is one of my favorite anime, which may also be due to the fact that I used to play in bands myself. When I was in Japan, I visited all locations from the anime that I could get to, so you could say I am a bit obsessed over this one.

Yeah, the reviews here do make them sound great. But, then when I've had a look myself, I just don't see it.

Excellent analysis. K-On!! is by far my favourite anime of all time, and slowly but surely people are starting to understand what it was trying to accomplish

I thought that the review did a good job of explaining what kind of show K-On!! is and who would probably like it.
Do you feel like the show was made for you and you still did not like it?

To the reviewer, or other ANN staff:
I would still like to know what release was being reviewed.
Was it the two collections from three years ago being reviewed together?
Or is there a new complete K-On!! (aka season 2 of K-On!) release that I have not been able to find yet?
