I wasn't sure if I should buy the manga of Nozaki-kun, mostly because I'm not that fan of 4-panel manga. But after reading the review, I'll give it a chance once I have some spare money. I just hope I find it as funny as its adaptation.
I'm still waiting for a 2nd season of the anime, though. |

I haven't gotten my copy yet. A look at the pre-orders shows it is due this coming Wednesday from the comic shop. I'm looking forward to it. If it is anywhere near as good as the anime it will be a great read.

Appropriately enough, Gangan Online also published Daily Lives of High School Boys, along with Watamote and Barakamon. I think being an online magazine makes them more willing to experiment with oddball series that have a different sense of humor from the standard gag manga.

I really love nozokai which make it sad to me that fans always seem to ignore my merchandise for it at my booth.

How closely (or not) is the manga adapted by the anime version? Given that the anime version is (arguably) the best anime comedy of the past decade, is the anime version an improvement on the manga?

The anime is a pretty faithful adaptation. It changed the order of some minor things around but that's it. So if you don't want more of the same, avoid the first few volumes of the manga. |

One note on the realities of printing books: generally, a book is made up of "signatures" consisting of 8 or 16 pages (16 is most common). This is based on the way a single large sheet of paper folds down--think of when you were a kid (unless I was the only nerd who did this) and made your own little "books" by folding a piece of paper in half, quarters, eighths, and then trimming off the folded outer edges to get separate pages. The printer prints the page content on these large sheets of paper, then folds them, binds the book together, and trims the edges clean.
That means it's not so easy to just add 1-2 pages at the end of a book to fit the translation notes when there isn't a spare page in the Japanese book that can be put to use for this purpose. You actually have to add 8 or 16 pages, and fill them all with ads, a preview of the next book (or another series), or random panels extracted from the pages like Tokyopop did in their later years... (I never understood why they did that until I started working in this industry. I still think it was an odd choice.) There's my inside info :) I'm just sorry I don't have a good joke to round it off! |

Thanks, Lys! Then I amend my complaint to "a note saying where the translation notes are would have been nice."
 Both inside covers were used for what I assume to be the original under-the-dust-jacket comics, but a little asterisk with a page number on the title page might have worked.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. We own the Japanese volumes one through five, and four ends with the festival (they tack on a little bit more for closure in the anime.) There are jokes and scenes throughout the way that aren't in the anime, so I don't think you'll be disappointed buying it rather than waiting for volume 5. Note that by the tankobon numbering the anime part ends with chapter 40, which is the end of volume 4. Perhaps the numbering is different online? I don't see anything from 第41号 onwards in the anime.

This is one series where I'm torn. While I really enjoyed the anime, and would like to see more...I'm unsure if I should. Loved how the ended the anime, as it felt very fitting, and I do wonder if my journey with these characters should really end there or not.
I'd say that Kawai Complex is in a similar boat. The endings felt very satisfying to me, and I do wonder if I look at what is beyond will destroy the initial journey. |

Oh no, really? It has a release date of 11/17 according to the encyclopedia...(my bookshop cares nothing for official release dates, so I can usually get stuff early.) Are you outside the US? That might do it.
