I'd also say that the fact that they're OAV are a large portion of this vs. other titles, as well.

FUNimation has their simuldubs, which are still at least a month behind the original broadcast. In general, weekly anime are finished within the week that they broadcast. While it's one thing to get the script to the translators to get a workable subtitle track, it's another to get the materials to be able to dub the show in such short notice. It's simply not feasible, for a weekly television broadcast, to do a true simuldub release.

With OAV, on the other hand, you have a much larger time frame. With Gundam Unicorn, there were, at most, only 2 episodes released each year (some years only had 1). That gave a huge time frame for being able to do the dubs. Likewise, in a year, we've only gotten 2 episodes of Origin, and it's likely to continue in a manner similar to Unicorn.

The initial plan was to distribute Gundam Unicorn through Bandai Entertainment, just as repackaged Japanese Blu-rays. When Bandai Entertainment shut down, Right Stuf was quickly brought in to fill the void, and they quickly produced lower cost DVDs.

But weren't the BD and DVD releases of Unicorn handled independently of each other? At around the time Bandai Visual released episode 4 on BD, Bandai Entertainment decided to release the first four episodes on DVD at affordable prices.

When Bandai Entertainment was shut down, the DVD release of Unicorn was on limbo until Sunrise and Right Stuf struck their deal to resume the DVD release of all 7 episodes. But the BD release continued without a hitch even after Bandai Entertainment shut down.

That is, of course, unless they withhold the Japanese broadcast until the day of the simuldub, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

This is how Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan works in regards to Viz's simulpublishing: The chapters are actually finished two to three weeks before release. Shueisha waits for Viz. It is a lot easier to do with manga than with anime though.

The lengthy distance between each episode in rollout gave NYAV plenty of time to do a high quality English dub of each episode of Gundam Unicorn, and it continues with The Origin. I only wish you didn't have to break the bank in order to afford to even watch them, let alone collect the Blu-Rays. The first five volumes of Unicorn were pricey enough, but then the sixth and seventh volumes were extra expensive, due to their slightly longer runtimes. By then, they've already gotten you over a barrel. I'm not making the same mistake with The Origin. I'll just rent it streaming on Daisuki.

High quality or not, Bandai/Sunrise is squeezing the fans for all they've got with these new Gundam OVAs. Greedy corporate bigwigs are why anime fans forgo purchasing physical media these days. It's disgusting.

I know it's a lot to ask, but I wish all the Gundam series would get dubs. But sadly, Gundam fans are picky over what constitutes a good Gundam series, like if it's not Wing or 00 it's crap, or in many other cases if it's not UC it's garbage.

There is a less expensive option if you import the standard BD editions from Japan. I bought the first two OVA's from amazon.co.jp, and it came to around $50 each with shipping included.

I suppose it is nice for hardcore fans that Right Stuf sells the special editions, but I remain a bit puzzled as to why they are not offering the standard editions as well. I think Sunrise/Right Stuf are leaving money on the table.

They did it with Space Dandy on Toonami so you never know they could do it again in the future. Wink

Or if it's not G it's boring political war crap...

While I would love a perfect world where everyone gets what they want, sadly we don't live in it. This is no longer the case for recent installments, but I really doubt we'll see a dub for Gundam X, Victory Gundam and even Turn A Gundam (Don't know if the license rescue on this one guaranteed a dub. I'm guessing no). As we know already, retro titles are in very low priority list of getting a dub if it didn't have one before.

What do you have against Ocean? A lot of Gundam was dubbed by them and I think that it would make sense to have them dub more Gundam.

Considering how uncommon how they hardly dub anime anymore, it would be interesting to see them get another success that isn't MLP.

I rather enjoyed the Ocean dubs of the original 0079 TV series and Char's Counterattack. GW's dub doesn't hold up quite as well, but there's some good effort in there, and I'll have to revisit 00 because I was on the fence about that one.

It was better, at least, when they used the Ocean studios proper, and not their Blue Water branch, which I never cared for. G Gundam's dub has some narm charm, perhaps, but the Zeta Gundam dub was too stiff-sounding.

I think NYAV has blown them away, though, with their dubs of Unicorn and The Origin.

Compare it cowboy bebop ghost in the shell and the uc gundam ova it's almost as horrible as 4kids plus I had bad taste in the unicron trilogy dub.

But then compare those dubs to Black Lagoon, Death Note, and NANA and you'll see that Ocean Group can definitely hold their own when they need to.

Don't forget Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha. Ocean Group has some good dubs.

Anyway, this reminds me of when Hell Girl was dubbed by Funimation, but then they did not dub the second and third seasons, instead giving it to Sentai Filmworks to release as sub-only.

But they are no Steve blum, Steve Cannon, Wendy Lee, Stephanie Sheh, Keith Silverstein, Yuri Lowenthal, Beau Billingslea or any NYAV voice cast.
