Hype! The Asterisk War was one of those anime that started out super generic but quickly grew on me, (Especially with the introduction of Kirin) so its a surprise hit for me personally. Can't wait to buy the Light Novels, manga, and the anime when they all come out next year (At least I think the anime is licensed by FUNimation, not sure).

Fab news all round. Adore Asterisk, read the first 6 volumes (7th soon) and it just gets better and better. Re:Zero I have heard of but not read any but like the sound of it.

@Catsplay - the anime is licensed by AoA so you can expect a high quality release (unless they pull a Mekakucity Actors) if nothing else.

I think FUNI is only streaming Asterisk, while Aniplex will release it.

Is Asterisk popular enough to bring it to the States? Anyway, it's a nice surprise. If I end up wanting more of the show, I might buy the novels.

Going for an e-book version moreso than a print version would help fight fan translations. That is, though it is copyright infringement, at least fan translations can sometimes get the translated product quicker than the wait time between the official announcement and its release.

Oh look, a new light novel license announcement! Can't wait to prowl the other sites now and relish in the pain of butthurt weebs!

But on a serious note isn't the Asterisk War one of the two series this season that people were saying were literally the exact same? I'm kind of baffled since I've heard nothing but bad things about it but hey they probably know more about the market than I do. I've heard pretty good things about Re:Zero so I'll probably buy that when it comes out.

Edit: lol top comment on the /r/LightNovels is "hate this. they license novels that is getting fans-translations, they should license a novel which isnt translated by fans ... dammint. this is only the beginning" never change /r/LightNovels, never change...

These are a great set of licenses. I'm particularly glad to see that we're going to be getting the Sword Oratoria novels. They do a lot to build up even more of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon's world and give some great insight into the Loki Familia.

Other than that, Re:Zero is a huge surprise, but one that I'm extremely excited for. What I was able to read of the manga had me hooked on the groundhog day-esque scenario, but it cut off before I could continue, so having an official release, which I can more easily support, has me so pumped.

Finally, the licensing of The Asterisk War, which I think is great. With a cast of characters I genuinely care about (and in this case, most of the main cast lives up to that, something many of the others in this genre don't manage), and a plot that gets better as it goes on, I'm eager to add this one to my collection.

I'm just shocked that it's coming out this Summer, seeing as it is taking them so long to bring over Irregular at Magic High School. However, I'll gladly accept a Summer 2016 release for this one.

I think a lot of the bad things about The Asterisk War stem from the fact that there were three other similar anime series launched prior to this season, and then two more this season.

However, despite a relatively generic start, the series is actually pretty strong overall. It really does pick up and handle its characters quite well. It's still not the most original series, but much like many shonen manga, it's excellent at what it does.

Oh, didn't know that Haimura Kiyotaka did the art for the DanMachi spinoff, I might actually have to get that. EDIT: Ohh, the LNs, not the manga, I'm even more interested in them now!

Very interested in Re:Zero, I got hooked on the manga adaptation and can't wait to see how the anime plays out.

Asterisk is still one of the most generic things I've seen and I will not be partaking in the source material O.o

I'm down for more Sword Princess. Aiz was the only character that kept me coming back to the anime (Sorry BellxHestia fans)

The Asterisk War will have to really impress me with these last few episodes, otherwise I'll just pass up on the novels.

Don't have anything to say about Re:Zero as I have not seen it yet.

Question- when does Asterisk War get good? I've been thinking of watching it but from what I've seen it seems very unoriginal and cliche.

Great news on the Asterisk War LN. Seven Seas and Yen press are awesome these days, after the fall of Toyko pop I felt like the NA manga/ln market would go away but I feel like its more thriving now then ever.

Greatly anticipating the anime too as I really want to see it but I don't watch anything until I've bought the physical release of it so hopefully its popular enough for Aniplex to dub Anime smile

@ the poster above in this thread, I've never visited reddit and I don't spend much time browsing forums but are there really a lot of people who think like that? I can understand fan translations being helpful as unfortunately a lot of stuff never gets official licensed but actually getting mad that something will now have an official release? I can't comprehend that line of thinking at all.....

Yeah me as well. I mean I read fan translations, but I gotta say, ALL official translations are significantly better. Well maybe not all, but I haven't found an instance where the FT was better than the OT.

And I did die of joy when Index got announced for official release. And I must say the OT of it is pretty amazing. Especially compared to the FT.

Although some people getting mad might have to do with a certain site that takes down the FT of LN's as soon as the OT get announced.

The usual themes are either 1.) NOOOOOOO the fan translations are going to be taken down!! 2.) Yen Press translators are incompetent and no where near as good as (Fan Translator name) 3.) F***!! now its going to taken 5-6 years for them to catch up with the fan translations, F*** you Yen Press!

Obviously a lot of forums (/r/manga for example) have more positive responses but if you want to get extremely pissed off you should read the post on the Overlord fan translator's blog where he talks about the licensing and how he's halting his translation. THAT the thread was the biggest pile of cancer I've read in a while, even the translators was asking for calm and saying how this was a good thing.

Some people will never be happy.

A lot of the anger is because [most/good] fan translators cease translation as soon as the license is announced, and/or take down the volumes they've already translated. So it's the "you're denying me what's already available" as well as the "what do you mean I have to wait?"

Yen Press, a few years ago at their Sakura-Con panel, was asked about their release rate of light novels. I don't remember the exact answer, but basically it boils down to you don't want to over saturate the market with too many titles (hence them only licensing/announcing/releasing 2-3 new titles at a time), and you don't want to flood the market with a large number of books close together, either. The first makes it harder for people to choose books, so they end up buying less overall. The second makes people make second thoughts about investing in something so big that it comes out so often, so they decide not to buy it (or to wait until it's finished/further and buy box sets). That's why they have that 3-4 month delay between books, and only release 3-4 volumes a year.

Fan translators don't have to worry about sales and attrition and everything, so they pump it out as fast as they can. In general, it's the entitled fans who get upset about licensing, because now not only do they have to pay to get what they were getting for free, but also they have to wait until the official translations catch up with the fan translations, which could take years.

It's the same problem with fansubbers and scanlators, as well, with many groups refusing to pick up shows that are licensed for streaming, or dropping books that get licensed, and fans getting upset.
