This is one of the reasons why it is important that any title when it gets an initial release and you enjoy it,You should get it as you never know if you will ever get a chance to see it again.
Also i want to point out that even if a series gets streaming rights and you find it on the net. There is no guarantee it will stay there. it will be difficult to acquire later down the road as even the ones that stream might eventually stop and be lost. A lot of titles even cult classics will eventually fade with time. So if there is a series you really enjoy,you should get a physical release when u can That is why it is also important even when we are in a streaming age a physical release is vital as a way to ensure its survival...like a book..as long as copies exist...it will forever exist. Another anime from the early 90's never released on DVD, but only on VHS... Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken. That's an anime worthy of being brought to DVD. There's already a new master for it that aired on the Toei Channel in 2007. As far as I'm aware, the new master only aired all the way through one time.

Maybe not movie fans, but anime fans dating back to the 90's KNOW what it's like to Gather Ye Physical Acorns on disk before someone takes the shows away again and doesn't bring them back. Ohh, do we ever. 
(And that's not counting those dating back to the VHS days, who thought we had to save our Studio Ghibli titles in air-conditioned vaults in case Disney suddenly "didn't feel like" dubbing any more.) We've learned our hard lessons in the real world, and the next generation of mainstream movie fans is already starting to learn what we went through, the hard way. Only disk has All Your Movies, Forever(tm). |

I'm still sad that I'm never going to see the Maze movie. Yeah, it wasn't anything special, but I enjoyed it.

I watched Oz and Hi-Speed Jecy. I didn't enjoy them, though and I'm not interested in the others from the list, so I don't know how available they are. But generally I've found pretty much every anime I ever wanted to watch.
There's only a few exceptions of anime I still couldn't find. Among them are for example Kansuke-san to Fushigi na Jitensha, all 372 episodes of Kochira Katsushikaku, Bemubemu Hunter Kotengu Tenmaru, Nora and a version of Wild 7 with the original voice acting. |

That is basically the idea I apply towards purchasing physical discs. I'm not as frustrated with Sunrise as Funimation, Sentai, and many fans are with the Bandai license rescues simply because I picked up the DVDs of the shows I really liked when Bandai was still around. |

Sakigake!! Otokojuku is another one of those classic 80's anime that we never even got. Wonder if it'll ever happen now.

The moral of the story seems to be to archive everything, regardless of personal opinion, and never stop with physical releases. Otherwise it will soon be gone and irrevocably disappear.

It is very sad when an anime never got a digital (DVD or Blu-ray) release, since we all know analog media never had full standard definition (720x480) and degrades with time (still remember those nasty dots in laserdiscs). Some fellas at gog.com have been recovering the rights of long forgotten computer games (i.e. recently re-releasing many AD&D gems), something similar should done with old (but not forgotten) animes. It would be nice if someone in Japan did the archaeological work of getting the licenses of many of forgotten gems that at one time were released with subtitles in VHS, before the master reels end dumped in a junkyard

I'm still hoping someday some company will re-release Paranoia Agent.
I owned it. I lent my box-set to a friend and never got it back. As far as I know he rides his bike across the U.S. (as some kind of drifter). So, it means that it is likely it was left with his ex who one day randomly decided to hate me. So, yeah never seeing those again. So, I have a big hole in my Satoshi Kon collection. |

Speaking of old shows, does anyone happen to know how well a show like R.O.D the TV did back then (in JP), especially when you consider how long it took for the R1 AoA to sell out?

Not sure, but there was a DVD of the TV series, and then they had that special BD of the TV series and the prequel movie. |

As someone who started getting into and collecting anime in 2008, I really appreciate Discotek focusing on license-rescuing so many old school anime as a lot of these older titles would cost obscene amounts of money now. I've only begun to dig into their catalog (focusing on some Lupin stuff first but also just ordered Dragon Half) but I definitely plan on getting a lot from them. Also just got all of the Gatchaman TV series on BR for only about $50 thanks to the RightStuf holiday sale which is an amazing deal (also got Gatchaman Crowds) as well as all the sets for the various series/movies of Dirty Pair (hot bounty hunters having crazy space adventures? I'm sold!) on sale as well.
I know plenty of older anime remain unlicensed and I sympathize but personally I'm just happy to be able to get a decent amount of the old stuff period. While I admit I usually buy and watch more stuff from the 2000's to now, I still do enjoy and want to own a good deal of the old school stuff. Also, since R.O.D. was brought up, I was super grateful I ordered that nice BR set on a previous holiday sale for a good deal. As several of my friends had said what a great series it was I would have hated to have missed out on it. |
