I've watched it with the Japanese voicing and I have to say Kana Hanazawa did a good, nuanced performance as Ryouko; that the character's flat monotone is affected comes through as her actual emotions are subtly audible.
I mildly disagree with Martin's take on the theme of individualism; I thought the leader of the "normality enforcers" eventually came across as quite cruel and domineering (spoiler[The blackmail scene finally hows how ruthless she is, does it not? This after the fake-out of her not being comfortable with the physical ruthlessness of the boy from her posse earlier in the film.]), and it's true that all the "dream soldiers" in the film are making a shallow pretense of being interesting people,spoiler[ which even the male lead accuses his counterpart of doing, which given his backstory is also self-criticism]. |
