Oh yeah yeah, switch to Anime, because for the handful of decent titles out there you've got to put up with hordes of pedorific, borderline ugly crap. Yeah, anime is SOoOoOOO great

Or that's how you remember it.

I'm sure some of the shows I think that were so great are probably crap. My brother doesn't want to watch Thundercats, He-Man or other stuff like that because he scared they'd be terrible. Though I did watch an episode of Mask and it was pretty good.

Some American shows are good. Some Japanese shows are good. Take the good ones ane leave the rest.

I know that the Animaniacs were awesome. Not too sure about the other shows I used to watch, but there are some sure bets for shows that were just plain awesome.

Tired of smartmouthed kids and you watch Full Metal Alchemist? ... Okay...

Wait till he comes across the other sides of anime....

But okay, Japanese TV animation is usually seen as better because it has so many various genres and styles and assumedly has more talent working for it since 2D animation is still a popular medium in Japan as compared to America...

Heh, but Paranoia Agent certainly is a masterpiece. I was so surprised it'd be shown on Cartoon Network, but either way - as long as it gets more publicity that's great.

Sturgeon's Law + Basic facts about animation industry worldwide = Duh, of course Japan has a better probability of producing good shows.

I grew up with 1970's/80's cartoons. Remember Jabberjaw, Dungeons and Dragons, Gummi Bears and all that other crap? At least the modern American stuff is better than what we had then.

I do have to laugh though when they say there are no smart mouth kids or (from another thread) no large breasted women when comparing to US cartoons, comic books. The mark of reporter who watches two episodes of a series and thinks he or she has learned everything.

Well, personally I thought Sturgeon's Law described the anime industry pretty well. When I had an otaku level obsession and bought everything in sight, even I had to admit there was a lot of crap out there (anyone remember Amon Saga?) I think the reason a lot of the anime looks so good is because it's new and it's conventions are a novelty to us. Watch a lot and you start to see the cliched stuff as well

Look at the bright side: At least Solomon reviewed three of the best series on the market right now. My stepdad actually called me on the phone when this aired and said that he was really interested in the series they mentioned, particularly Samurai Champloo. My stepdad, to this point, has absolutely NOT been interested in any anime whatsoever. So, good job, NPR. You've done something that I was never able to do.

On a related note, this is a nice step up from the previous segment that NPR had on anime. No Yu-gi-oh clips or mispronounced names.

Are you talking about that one with the guy taht went to Japan so his kid could indulge himself in Gundam? That was ok, I have to agree, but not all that great.

I can't believe people are complaining. There is no way to make yall happy. Anime gets good publicity, and all yall can do is knock it down and say how it's not that good.

On a related note, I thought a lot of the shows I grew up with were great. I've seen Thundercats recently, and it's still good. Now, GI Joe... I don't remember it being as corny. Apparently, the enemy likes to scream out their name when they are firing on the Joes.
I recently got ahold of copies of David the Gnome (terrible quality, but I've been after it for a while), and it's still awesome. I loved Gummi Bears and Paw Paw Bears and Snorks... all those are still great. And you can't forget Pirates of Dark Water.

It's nice to see NPR giving anime some respect, but I wish they'd have found a better guy to do the reviews. The man's delivary screams "I'm reading this from a piece of paper!" Being able to read something while sounding conversational is an essential broadcasting skill-I guess this guy was asleep that day at Radio School.

That said, I admire him greatly, because he figured out a way to watch animation, and get paid for it. I WANT HIS JOB.

Apart from their comedy bits, that's how NPR always sounds. Rolling Eyes

Oh, but getting his job is easy. Spend about twenty years writing for various newspapers, and maybe you'll get it, or something like it. Incidentally, there's a *reason* he sounds as if he was 'asleep that day at Radio School' - he generally works for newspapers (in particular, the LA Times), *not* radio.
