Daimidaler has one of the funniest official websites with definitely the funniest source code ASCII penguin art one could make. And that's really the funniest thing about the series: the penguins, and their ridiculousness. From Number Six to Dennis, the penguins just steal the show.

I'm a little disappointed that you didn't mention the music for Sketchbook. It's done by Ken Muramatsu, who also worked on the music for Umi Monogatari, and while it's not as traditionally beautiful as UM's music, it's still a very nice, lightly jazzy house band OST that represents one of the few anime OST's (that isn't made by Yoko Kanno) that I can listen to by itself (without the show) AND has stood the test of time. (I.E. I'm still listening to it from time to time, several years after I bought the soundtrack CD.)

Thank you for the review of Daimadaler.
That looks like it would be right up my alley, and I suspect that I will enjoy it much more than the reviewer did. Sketchbook seems like it would be good for me too. This was a very helpful Shelf Life for me. |

Correction: The director of Sketchbook - Full Color'S, Haraike, only directed two eps. of Aria The Natural. Calling him the director of Aria is a bit much I think.
Also, wouldn't more appropriate comparisons be to Hidamari Sketch and G.A. Geijutsuka Art Design Class? They're both iyashikei/4-koma in an art school setting like Sketchbook - Full Color'S. Aria and Azumanga Daioh have different settings. The latter are better-known though, that's true. |

Ah, Sketchbook - Full Color'S, that takes me back! Was one of my first 4koma SoL series (after Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star), but perhaps still my favourite. The characters, the humour, the pretty backgrounds and especially the music made it a very memorable experience. It's also the series that first drew my attention to Kana Hanazawa, and, IIRC, the series with Yōko Hikasa's very first anime role. Although it should be noted that the original manga isn't that much into iyashikei and a lot more into untranslatable puns and biological (particularly entomological) geekdom. Works for me just as well though, now that my Japanese is good enough not to need explanations most of the time.

She's likely referring to Junichi Sato. ANN lists him as in charge of Storyboards for episode 4, but also in a far more ambiguous role of supervision. Sounds like while he may not have been the director, he had a role in forming the overall show. |

The website is the greatest thing. I've spent many long hours with the music playing on repeat, and I only discovered the ASCII code penguin the other day; it's a website that always has something new for you to discover. The greatest thing was that the website actually featured in an episode of Daimidaler (including music!) and the main characters had a discussion about how bad a website it is. I really enjoyed Daimidaler for how stupid it was. Some people seemed to go into it thinking it was somehow taking itself seriously, but when one of the skits is a man getting so traumatised by front-tails that he freaks out at the site of a banana, I think it's clear this isn't a serious show. I was looking at my old screenshots from it the other day and still found myself cracking up at it, which either says a lot for the shows humor, or means my sense of humor is terrible. That said, it did get some pretty great bits later on in the series; I loved Kiriko and Shouma and their relationship and was upset when spoiler[Shouma became a penguin]. I also got a bit emotional during the episode about Six/Sex. Also, the theme song is so catchy, it's wonderful. |

Awesome collection! The clue made me think of Time Of Eve, but that screenshot looks like something else.

Is this some kind of subtle way of dissing "Is the Order a Rabbit"?! How dare you. |

TheTsunami got it in the first post. I should have made it harder! But Time of Eve was a great project too. I'm preparing for Riding Bean next from AnimEgo, and I can't wait to get my Otaku No Video set this year. |

It's been years since I saw Sketchbook, but from what I remember: First half, cute and extremely relaxing. Second half (once Kate is introduced), hilarious.

{slaps forehead} That's why I bought it! I watched the first two episodes on DVD after seeing it years ago but it wasn't really what I remember. But with that name, oh yes, her speech... Odd to see Damaidaler get... not liked or appreciated... accepted? Taken for what it is. Maybe closer to tolerated. Anyway, after watching the sub version and liking it for what it tried to do with the usual Go Nagai likes- the hair of the lead should have been a dead giveaway-, I've been enjoying the dub more. I've never seen so much effort at making dumb perverted things smart. They made describing perverted acts into alliterative tongue twisters for some reason; Even the idea of someone writing it to match lip flaps is pretty funny. They did a good job with the language in Yamada's First Time but that's basic adaptation 101 compared to this glorious mess. I mean perverted, sick, twisted stuff. Yeah. |
