I find this show to be pretty fun especially the two main girls - Hotaru and Saya. The episodic dagashi daily adventures feels kind repetitive but the comedy is quite entertaining.
I'm somewhat surprised that it's a full series but the anime definitely captures the magic of the premise so far. |

So far I love the show, having read a good portion of the fan translations of the manga I have noticed the anime leans on Hotaru for Fanservice while in the manga it's more subtle.
Still love the show and I love Saya's cute fang/Snaggle-tooth thing, it makes her super adorable. |

I like the eyes of all the characters and how they contrast; Hotaru's eyes are those of a true zealot, manic and focused. Saya's, on the other hand, are wide eyed but unfocused so you can never really tell what she's looking at. Also, she looks constantly surprised so that's fitting. Coconuts- u... am I the only hearing the u on the end of the name while the subtitles try to convince me it's just nuts?
Anyway, Coconutsu has the scowl of a perpetual frowner even before he meet Hotaru. Dark underlined eyes make the guy the perfect foil.... for life for life. And that's the show because that's the cast. I suppose they could have done more characters but I'd have the feeling that Hotaru would just push more assertive people out of the screen anyway. It's a fine line though; While I'm sure Hotaru can carry the show, there's always going to be the feeling that she could be more entertaining somewhere else, doing something... or just about anything really. And Saya and Coconuts-u would just wasting time on a park bench without her there so at least they know they're boring. My main thought about Hotaru from the first episode was that she was aggressively quirky and I'm glad they dialed it back a lot for episode two. She has more of a contagious playful fervor now which is a lot more workable- even relatable- than "Look at me, I'm amusingly weird!" And two gags about her not knowing about winning popsicle sticks. One more and it's officially a running gag... |

I agree completely with Nick on this. While I did laugh out loud at the sight of that poor candy trying to blow itself, I found myself more charmed at the scene on the bench with Saya, because it got summer break laziness so right. I hope they can have more real scenes like this despite the comedy nature of it.
In fact, now that I think about it, what I like about the show reminds me an awful lot of Non Non Biyori. You'd almost think the same person did the backgrounds. |

love the theme of the show and the characters. comedy is really enjoyable and hopefully romance has a more prominent role in future episodes, similar to episode 1. one of my fav shows so far this season.

No, you're not. I also hear that little "u". I guess that's how they pronounce "coconuts" as well. I really want to like this show, but so far it has been the most boring show of the season so far to me. I was expecting to laugh out loud during most of the episodes, but the only think I do is yawn and wish for the episode to end. I find nothing, absolutely nothing appealing about the candy fictional stories. So far those has been the worst part of the show, and the one of the whistle drags too much IMO. Then the other problem I have is Hotaru herself. I like her type of character, and her overall design and all the effort put in her personal animation is very interesting, but that's it. I feel it's trying too hard to be funny and over-the-top. It's like she is overshadowing everything with her personality, including the other characters like Kokonotsu and Saya, who seem to be just two random people watching Hotaru do her crazy stuff. Overall, I found the second episode abysmal compared to the first episode, and maybe because this last episode didn't feature Kokonotsu's father, who was the funniest part of the first episode. I really hope the show gets better later on, because right now it's not working for me at all. |

His name is Kokonotsu, his friends jokingly call him Coconuts. Also yes the thing at the end is probably just one of those weird Japanese speech things, but it's also possibly them calling him by his real name and the sub being off. |

I think Japanese have trouble with foreign words with terminal consonants so vowel sounds just show up. A leading cause of Engrish. |

That's just how non-Japanese words tend to be spoken. The only consonant sound that appears at the end of words in Japanese is "n". Everything else ends in an a, e, i, o, or u sound. So very often when non-Japanese words are being spoken they'll add a vowel sound to the end of the word. Listen to how Christmas is spoken in almost any anime. It's pronounced with a "u" sound at the end (kurisumasu). |

Focused isn't quite the word I'd use. More like dizzy from her sugar high. Speaking of which, though she's a cute if demanding drunk, the placebo inebriation joke is getting old. I've seen that several times in the last few months, but I've never seen it happen once in real life. Why is this even a thing?
Oh, I dunno, there are a lot of those candies she could be having sex with. I was fully expecting a banana shot with that sugar-coated candy they started this episode with, so it was kind of nice they took the fan service in a more creative direction. As for Kokonotsu's name, sometimes they call him that, other times they call him Coconuts because that red-headed kid nicknamed him that and the others have picked it up a little. There is a difference in how they pronounce the two. It's not easy to hear though, like the difference between Oonoda and Onoda in Yowamushi Pedal. I think I'm liking this more than Nick but not as much as the true believers. The second episode was better for me, so I hope it continues to improve. It's at least entertaining mind candy. |

So far I think it's been a great adaptation from the manga, especially the few tweaks they did for Saya. In the first episode Saya's scene of super sweet coffee is anime only as far as I'm concerned, since she is introduced by the bike incident in the manga, and in the second episode she looks relatively less averted to Hotaru's game, and Hotaru herself looks more friendly with her, or so I got it.
I like the manga not because it's particularly good or super funny (at times, it really is), I like more the interaction between characters feeling real and entertaining, and of course the eye-candy (pun totally intended).
Hardly. I mean, the anime makes it more outstanding since it's, well, animated, has a voice and color, but there is no lack of trying in the manga whatsoever. In the anime we have still, moving shots that make us expect to see something and it leaves a somewhat more clear impact compared to the manga in which most of the time the image is there already. Plus, the breaks with an illustration of either Saya/Hotaru are straight from the manga, which always uses the front page for it. |

The anime really does play up Hotaru's sexualization, even if suggestive poses were used as covers for the manga. The manga depiction is much more innocently presented during the actual story.
Also I wish the subs would use "dagashi" instead of the absolutely inaccurate generalized term "candy". There are many dagashi that do not resemble the Western description of candy at all, and the show is specifically meant to educate the history of dagashi. It seems odd that the translation team thought of this as a good idea when it's in the title of the show. |

The Japanese word for, and pronunciation of, coconut is "kokonattsu" (ココナッツ). The character's name, however, is Kokonotsu. So it's a very subtle difference. (Also worth mentioning the Japanese doesn't specify quantity - coconut and coconuts are both kokonattsu, so the nickname could be either.) |

I think the nickname Coconuts somewhat appropriate; a coco-/chocolate- coated nuts - a candy. Either that, or a more direct relation to the fruit itself, due to its thick shell.
Wouldn't the singular form end with a "to" sound (kokonatto), with the "tsu" used for the plural form? |

this show s just riffing off the high i got from kofuku graffiti, and im completely okey with that. if we get a comedy with super moe eating delicous colorful food every few seasons i would be satisfied
