I think it's an alright show, quite a bit of action, mixed with generic characters and tolerable CGI. I really have no idea what direction this show will go but Azuma's role in the show has been prominent so far (including his relations with his Mother which still has influence in the present storyline). Hopefully will be a hit rather than a miss.

Putting the visuals aside, this has all the makings of a good anime if it can take time to build the characters and plot better. Also, I think it should be mentioned that this is going to be a 24 episode split cour.

It seems to me they are trying to do a Kill la Kill with CGI type of anime, which is obviously a bad ida since the effects look horrible, The emotion of their voices and the stiffness of the CG distracts me from the story.
I am not an oponent of CGI, but it being such low quality makes it hard to defend. If producers decide they would use a superior CGI engine that would make it look good but the art style of Anime changes I wouldn't mind.

All i can say that this was the first anime i dropped this season and 2nd was Ajn for obvious reason fully crappy CG...If people can handle to watch that then good for ya but iam one of thoose that simply cannot watch this style i can tolerate a few things in CG but the whole thing just nope anyway this whole winter seems to have bunch of CG in new animes pretty much every single one of them has somethin, i truly hope this doesnt become some new trend and they gonna continue like for the rest of the year.
They simply really need to improve the CG first to make it atleast somehow good so it doesnt look all so stiff and awkward specialy if they wanna do the whole thing. I think they should keep their fingers off it until they can manage somehow the frame work better, doing it halfway like this just aint good.
Anyway this is just my opinion on the whole thing with CG, hope nobody takes this too much to his heart and starts any rude shizzle.

Putting aside the absolutely awful CG (I've bashed on it quite enough now, it's just that this crappy season is full of it), what is up with the english title of the show?

What the heck is that disaster of a title "BBK/BRNK" and who thought it was a good idea.

If you've seen Ajin, you know that the CG character animation in this series could be so, so much worse—BBK/BRNK is blissfully free of the marionette-like stiff-jointed limb-flailing that so often defines CG anime characters. BBK/BRNK is 110% watchable by comparison.

I didn't have any problem with the character designs or the animation. However, the complete lack of a coherent plot or story line killed this for me.

This. The only story we have is from the promising beginning, which has quickly fallen apart into nothing but cliched action from cliched characters. The animation is fine--I don't mind the 3D. It's better than most of what I've seen. But we need some kind of coherent plot or this will not be watchable.

When a full-CG series come out you realise what's the real problem with them: time. Not gonna say I'm any expert in the field, but the best looking TV anime episodes we've seen (you name it, Euphonium/Hyouka, Fate by Ufotable, HxH/OPM) need the most time of work, likely 3 months or more. We've seen when a high-ambition production doesn't have enough time, it falls miserably (sorry, God Eater) or drops its quality considerably.

In the case of CG, it clearly needs polishing technical-wise, but it also needs more time of production. The real flaws don't lie only in the stiffness or weightlessness of the characters (it is a problem but from a different area), it lies in how many things are left unattended, especially faces.

The most clear example is in episode 2, the girl villain and the cyan/green braid girl (don't expect me to remember that many names just now) bot have wide mouths, and depending on the angle they're shown their faces look tremendously flat, uncanny, and basically kills the mood, not even the time it's supposed to be funny works (when they're surprised by the little girl and the protagonist being so close), there are a handful of scenes where they do look pretty great tho.

Do you know who doesn't have this problem? Almost everyone else whose mouths are small; they manage to be somehow cute when they're supposed to, and most of the time they won't fail in the worst kind of uncanny valley.

That being said, it's another problem when you are distracted looking at animation and not paying attention to the story; although, so far not much has happened.

I didn't think the CG was all that bad, pretty good actually. Sure, it could use a few more frames of animation in spots, but it wasn't particularly sluggish and it didn't take long to forget about it. I guess if you aren't used to Japanese CG TV shows or used to watching CG cut scenes in video games this could be pretty jarring.

As a total package, however, not so sure what I think yet. It feels and looks like a show made for the tween crowd, but story definitely wants to skew towards young adults and Good Smile Company's apparent involvement certainly supports that (GSC makes figures for adult collectors, they don't really target kids directly like Bandai or Takara Tomy). I feel like someone on the production committee really liked RWBY and really wanted to do something similar with giant robots didn't want to put in all the effort. Could turn out well, but it's going to need some work.

no one has been able to make 3D anime characters look good

Someone hasn't seen Aikatsu or Precure. Heck, even this season's Komugi looks quite good. Etotama's was also really good.
Or, you know, video games.

The problem isn't the character models at all. Did you notice what all those examples I gave have in common? They're all just during specific parts of the show (dancing, mainly).

The thing is CGI doesn't lend itself very well to the japanese method of animation. At least, we're not accustomed at all to this kind of animation in 3D. Animation in the west, be it 2D or 3D, is always consistent. It has about the same amount of movement at all times. Japanese animation plays a lot with frame rates, and doesn't put as much "animation" in cuts where it's not needed. That way, they leave the experienced animators handle the most important scenes.
That's why a fully CGI series runs into some problems. You're essentially telling them to forget all they know about animation.

Even then, I don't think the downtime parts are that awful, and they make it up with some great action. It's essentially the same as 2D anime, you're just not used to it in 3D. People accustomed to only western animation when exposed to a regular anime would also say that characters look stiff most of the time.

Personally, I like the japanese style because the best cuts look so much better than the consistent animations in the west. Besides, character acting in anime is much more symbolic (except for when the sakuga kicks in), but that's a topic for another day.

Anyways, about BBK/BRNK itself, the second half of the first episode was pretty weird, but the second episode totally sold me on it. Loving the Trigger vibes. Seems like Imaishi did the storyboards for the OP (it shows!) and I saw someone say that some Trigger staff were working on it, but I don't know if they were just referring to the aforementioned Imaishi contribution.

That's just BuBuKi BuRaNKi without the vowels. Kinda like FLCL. I like it, honestly.

Well I won't go over the CG again (bringing the show down, blablabla.

Episode one had some interesting stuff and showed enough promise for me to watch the second episode. Unfortunately the second episode, was the worst mix of cliche and random chaotic. You have everything I hate from shonen; main character is boring and flat but has super power where they use themselves so he's essentially just a key who has no initiative, all the supporting cast are super cliche and the bad guy are more interesting so it's really hard to root for the good guys. This bring the second problem, it's all chaotic and no information, for all we know the good guy aren't even the good guy! We see the giant mech that the mother drop into water and cause a huge tidal wave which probably killed many people so it seems like the evil government is in the right there. Then there's the sister who's five bajillion time more interesting than the main character who just disappear, why waste this character.
