I'd probably need to see an actual example of this technology to have a real opinion of it. Just going on their example layout at the bottom would give the impression the mechanism is fairly large. For a single display that seems like it'd put it at a disadvantage over a more conventional screen and projector layout.

Neat. Although, if you need a giant set up behind and around the image, it takes away (imo) much of the use of it being a "floating" image.

Wow, with all stuff like this, drones and hoverboards starting to become reality you really wonder what technology is gonna be like in another 10 years, too bad it's only on a diagram instead of maybe something like a video preview. Oh well I guess we'll just have to wait till 2020 to see Anime smile + sweatdrop .

Yeah, I know what you mean, to be honest I thought it was going to be something like a thin sheet under displaying an image (although I suppose it would have to be from behind because the person looking at is probably going to be in front and having the sheet underneath would only change the view for a person standing on top of it in mid air...)

That's how many technological developments are at first: Too impractical and expensive for any non-novelty use. Holographic TVs have already been invented, as are invisiblity cloaks, but the latter costs too much (US$500,000 each) and doesn't have any purpose something cheaper can't accomplish, and the latter still has a lot of major kinks to work out (such as how folds and creases can still be seen and how they're still only big enough to cover one human adult).

I'd suspect the next thing Mitsubishi intends to do is reduce the size of this device, but personally, it destroys most of its public use by requiring four large panels right next to it, which ruins the illusion. The device, as it is, could still have some use as storefront displays though.

The 2010 date could be mere coincidence, but if they could set something up above or around something like the Olympic Village, that would be rad.

Also, Miku concerts.

Well, if you want Miku singing and dancing between two large panels right by her sides. Personally, that looks rather clunky and clumsy.

Of course, I look forward to seeing how this technology evolves. It's kind of similar to when movies had just been invented and showcased to the public with stuff like Fred Ott's Sneeze, or the first live TV broadcasts displaying a ventriloquist's dummy.

This technology heralds a new era of potential technical faults and display issues. How I pity the A/V staff of tomorrow.

Well that certainly doesn't have the potential to be annoying Rolling Eyes

Seriously though, can't we already do this? How is the new technology different from the current Holograms?
