I remember a number of people predicted a casino theme on the One Piece Podcast, both hosts and listeners. Interesting to see that they're right. Well, maybe they're not, but this artwork leans strongly towards a casino theme. I wonder how it'll play out with the Straw Hat Pirates' level of power, considering Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji each have the ability to destroy mountains (or mountain-sized things) with single attacks and can defeat foes capable of wiping out islands (and the others are no slouch either with their own niches, like Usopp's improved sniping and Franky's increased versatility).

Would've preferred the western theme that Greg had predicted though. He's usually on the mark with deducing things, but then again, he does need foreshadowing to make accurate guesses, and this was purposely left vague.

A casino setting, eh? That's... not what I expected at all, but since almost every sort of setting fits within One Piece's world, it sounds awesome and has some good creative possiblities.

Very much looking forward to seeing this movie, but the BD probably won't release until December or so Sad

It did occur to me recently how some screen writers might be annoyed at how powerful characters like Luffy are since it could create scenarios that might not be as interestingly 'filmic' had they been more normal, that and I doubt they really give a shit about "power levels" as much as certain fans do. Hasoda got called in at just the right time since it was just before Luffy became able to use gear second. I think this overall wouldn't matter since a good screenwriter can make lemonade out of lemons but given the case of how movies like these are handled circumstances are just a tad bit different I assume. (sorry f the above doesn't seem to make any sense.)

That aside I'm wondering if they're trying to do another Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island kind of movie due to the script writer and director. I wouldn't mind since one piece with a noir-ish tone can be enjoyable (that one good filler arc from earlier in the series and I guess 6, but I'm not sure if I'd count that as "nior-ish" maybe IDK) and if they do I hope there can be a better mix of that tone with the usual one piece goofiness. I'll be looking forward to seeing this about a year from now.

The illustration is great, too bad the movie logo covers Luffy's hand though.

Oh, I don't mind the levels of power the main characters are capable of. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. I suppose I should use a different word--what concerns me is the current scale of conflicts the Straw Hat Pirates are in. They're no longer dealing with localized problems, but getting caught up in world-spanning politics, vast criminal networks, and centuries-long power struggles. Even if the antagonist of One Piece Film Gold is ridiculously wealthy, a story that seems to be set in a casino town feels out of place. It feels too small. What kind of casino story could possibly necessitate a pirate with a 500 million Berry bounty and the fighting strength to match that? If Pica, a man who can literally reshape the landscape, is no match against Zoro, what could a casino owner possibly have that can challenge him?

The previous recent movie villains have all had reasons they're incredibly powerful but aren't mentioned much: Shiki and Burnndy are part of the old guard, once-legendary figures who have become lost to time and old age but still pose huge but quiet threats. Z is a former Marines admiral who had been plotting in the background for a long time to overthrow the present world order. And Foxy, well...he's Foxy. He was a random encounter with purely personal stakes when he first appeared, and he forever will be a random encounter with purely personal stakes.

Maybe there WILL be something to tie this story into the One Piece universe as a whole. I do think it's going to be good. It's just that with the information we have right now, it feels off.

Also, Luffy and noir go together like oil and water. Luffy's about as moody, contemplative, emotionally conflicted, and restrained as a bear during salmon breeding season. If we're going to have a noir-like story, I'm guessing they're going to have to keep Luffy out of it for long periods of time. And if we're going the mobster angle, I think the manga is currently heading that way. Rather, I think it'll be closer to a heist story or an escape story.
