As a dub fan I could list dozens and dozens of VA that I absolutely love and while they may be "nobodies" to most of the general public they are very much celebrities to me
 (I waited 6 hours to see my favorite VA Christine Cabanos and meeting her was one of the most special moments in my life  ) and like kadmos said they specialize in it and put in the work to be good as its more then just being able to speak to voice anime dubs.

I prefer when they get the "normal" voice actor since they often are better established doing this stuff than celebrity voices.
A 10/28/11 article in The Atlantic called "How Celebrities Took Over Cartoon Voice Acting" mentioned that Robin WIlliams as Genie in "Aladdin" was a trendsetter for this practice. |

There's a lot of celebrities who do US cartoon voice acting (both TV shows and movies, ranging from actors like Tim Curry and Mark Hamil who do a ton, to actors known for live action who dabble in the occasional Pixar role), but it's quite a bit different with the US animation production method of "storyboard -> individually record the actors -> animate to match the actors." Dub work is much more like how anime is done (except that the dubbing is still done individually instead of ensemble like with anime), so the lip flaps are already there. So even someone who has experience with voice work for US cartoons may not be willing to work heavily on matching the lip flaps.

I'll completely admit that I sometimes watch hentai because a few of them actually have a story(Then again, most of them have better stories than regular porn.), and the ones I have watched dubbed are of... varying quality. Some are downright horrible, some are absolutely hilarious, and some are just OK. But if there's one thing that's consistent, its the very limited pool of voice actors, some of which I actually wish were involved in regular dubbing.
Also, I think that they haven't dubbed any hentai since around 2004 or 2005. You can tell by the art and animation of the ones that were dubbed that they were late 90's/early 2000's series. Last edited by Nyren on Mon Mar 07, 2016 1:50 pm; edited 1 time in total |

That's true: Before 1993, the "biggest star" in a 90's Disney movie was Robby Benson as The Beast, because he hadn't been working onscreen for 10 years, and was only finding voicework by that point. We didn't have the Dreamworks days of "Our animated movie stars Will Ferrell, Jerry Seinfeld and Ben Stiller!"; voices were pretty much cast as voices, before Eric Goldberg had the idea of creatively crafting a character as a vehicle for a star's very unique and appropriate act. (Something that hadn't really been done since Walt's day of Ed Wynn and Phil Harris.) Which brings up the point that it's really only Disney's Ghibli dubs that can afford to use celebrities--Funi and the other industry dubbers use the standard corps of Crispin Freeman, Luci Christian, etc.; Disney had been handed the job of dubbing Ghiblis and was the only one inexperienced enough in the field to hire name stars and VA's already experienced in American cartoons (eg. Mark Hamill, Tress MacNeille, John DiMaggio). Their first three, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke, before John Lasseter and the Disney/Pixar directors took over the dubs, had been voice-directed by Jack Fletcher, fresh off of his Pioneer US experience on the Tenchi dubs--And while he used name stars to keep their box office, you can hear some Tenchi alumni in the bit parts. (One of the iron-foundry women in Mononoke sounds distinctly like KT Vogt's Washuu.) Disney started out thinking that they had to preserve their theatrical-release box office with name stars, but also played it safe with casting existing "in-house Disney" names, like David Ogden Stiers, or Suzanne Pleshette in Spirited Away, fresh off of her work on Lion King II. Did Adult Source Media do some dubs with porn stars, or was Justin thinking of NuTech Digital which did use Asia Carrera and Kobe Tai?
ASM did license rescue a lot of the NuTech titles, but I do not think that they got any of those with Asia or Kobe. |

And little of merit came from that endeavour. Having first seen that OVA in dubbed form, the flatness of the delivery was somewhat of an obstacle. |

None, the answer is none. At least the Japanese dubs tend to have some mainstream voice actors under pseudonyms. |

That's pretty much the idea--Most actors don't WANT any porn work they did for a quick voice gig showing up on IMDB, let alone their resume. If it's not on the credits, it didn't happen. As for pseudonyms in regular dubbing, that's usually down to actors' union regulations, that might hinder an actor's ability to work on the dub or anything else, or might mandatorily price their minimum salaries out of the company's small budget. |

I more often than not prefer the voice of a normal VA to that of celebrity status when it comes to anime. I find the voices of celebrity actors to be wooden in some cases and even a bit grating on rare moments.
