Ah Higurashi again. Still fond memories. Maybe I'll pick this Blu-Ray up.

Any news on Kai yet? Haven't heard much on that.

It's listed on the Sentai Filmworks website and available for pre-order there and at Rightstuf. The scheduled release date is May 31. The Kai set is actually listed at a slightly higher price than the season 1 set, interestingly. Maybe they figure there'll be more demand for it, since even the people who have the old Geneon set won't have Kai.

This Higurashi collection isn't actually due out for release until next week, so we're getting a bit of an advance review here!

Even as I write this, what I love the most about When They Cry is in the thumbnail; It's the setting. Early 80s rurally rural Japan countryside. Did I mention that once you're out of the fields, you're in the woods? Small town secrets, isolation, desperation and well, hope. Eventually or so I've heard. Also one of the few times where the school club group has nothing to do with the series; It's just there as an excuse. Maybe also as a metaphor of some sort but I'd have to see season two to find out how true that could be.

Yeah, I may just get the BD and ignore the second season entirely. Not that I want to do that, it's just that Sentai is forcing me to either buy a sub only BD- not going to do it, ever- or buy both on DVD and that I won't do- I want to see what this looks like on my HD set up.

Rena with that knife though... should I take her home with me? Sentai's streaming season 1 so maybe if they also stream season 2- not like there's going to be a dub for it but still, it'd be a lot better to watch it without be spoiled by what you're reading ahead of the reveal.

Decisions, decisions.

I thought Etotama was shockingly better than expected, but $270 for the season is nutty. I wonder what the US sales numbers will be like?

Any possibility that we could hear more about the video/audio quality of the BD? Especially in comparison to the DVD? Things like clarity/blurriness, audio quality in Japanese+English, subtitle colour and typesetting, and how well the detail is retained in its upscaled state versus the original mastering of the DVD would be nice to know for prospective buyers in this case.

Just curious to know these things before I have to deal with high currency conversion rates to pick the show up.

I'm assuming you're posting in the wrong spot. Season 1 of Higurashi is retailing for $45 at rightstuf.

EDIT: Ahh my bad!! Shouldn't assume everything is about Higurashi in this talk!!!!

No they're not. Both seasons are sold separately on either DVD or BluRay. Also the 2nd season is where all the answers are relieved and there is finally some payback! Animation is improved as well.

He's referring to the portion before the shelf life review that includes the release notice of the 3rd Etotama set.

I've got Higurashi coming in next week (i probably could have had it by now if i'd gotten it through Rightstuf, but i ordered it through Amazon). I only know the story from the 8 volumes of the manga that i read; i've heard really good things about the anime, so i have high hopes Smile.

I don't know what happens in the 'solution' arcs, so i'm in suspense just like you guys.

What's also interesting about that price is that the second season will be a sub-only release.

I'm disappointed in Sentai for not redubbing season one and dubbing season 2.

I was aware of the OVAs but not the second season. That one's going on my list.

Yeah, that would have been nice. Or at least try to get the original cast back together for S2 somehow. Not sure they are all even still active though.

I'm very much a Dub guy, but I absolutely had to know how the story ended, so I did watch the second season subbed. Sooo glad I did too.

That said, I'm not sure why everyone praises it so highly over the English dub, neither is particularly stellar to be honest. Though, the JP actresses for Rika and Miyo did stand out to me at the time.

A/V wise the set is pretty standard for a release from the early 2000s. The colors are pretty lush, which I appreciated, though the clarity in visual probably highlighted some of the visual quirks I noted in the review. The set I received was BR only, so I can't speak to the original DVD mastering differences. In general, this show's strengths don't really lie in its audio/visual quality, so I don't know how vehemently I would argue that the Blu-Ray is the 100% Definitive viewing experience required for Higurashi. If you're on the fence and want to save a few bucks, I don't think you'd be missing out on too much of you settled for the standard-definition set.

Audio wise there were maybe two scenes in the back third of the show that dipped in volume rather unexpectedly, but I figured that anomaly could've come from my own setup. The subs were fine, aesthetically speaking, nothing especially creative or egregious either way. The translation seemed like it tended more towards the "faithful translation" end of the spectrum, which made some of the wording read a little oddly, but again, nothing so much that I felt compelled to highlight it specifically for the review.

I was also surprised by how much I enjoyed that show. But, it's not worth the kind of money needed for its release. Much like, for me, Denki-gai and Rokka...3 series I would buy if standard editions were available.

Oh, and I missed that Wolf Girl and Black Prince was released. Gonna buy that one.

On When They Cry, it's been a series I've been meaning to check out for awhile now. I've seen the Siren Visual releases for the first 2 season in stores, and been tempted to just buy them...but what's stopped me is that they haven't licensed the OVAs.

Pretty much what I'm doing. Hoping Sentai sees sales drop off after season one and it convinces them to at least do an eventual recast dub for the remaining parts. Doesn't hurt that season 1 is only $35 for blu-ray.
