Samurai Champloo Episode 01

by Kyle Pope,
From Bebop to Hip-Hop.

Given the success of Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim it didn't take much imagination to see that Samurai Champloo would be high on Cartoon Network's priority list as far as new acquisitions are concerned. So Spike, Jet and Faye meet Mugen, Jin and Fuu. Directed by the man who gave us Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo has many of the same stylistic touches as that famous AS staple. Only now the driving beat comes not from bebop jazz but instead from Hip-Hop. And not just the music. Half the fun of this show is spotting the various anachronisms as Edo era samurai sport the many accoutrements of modern hip-hop culture. So fire up your beatbox and sharpen your katana. No samurai drama has ever been this much fun.

Samurai Champloo 01: Tempestuous Temperaments

1) Not an Edit... Opening intact. (It would have been a crime to abbreviate or eliminate it.)

2) Jin's "shit" scratched out of "Even if that lord is an unimportant piece of shit". (Genius.)

3) Mugen's "shit" as the angry goons discover them after their escape digitally replaced with unintelligible mumbling.

If you have to mute out the language at least be creative about it. Someone was on the ball over at Adult Swim to use scratches to mute over the expletives. I commend them for finding a way to meet BS&P that is in keeping with the tone and humor of the show. Well done.
