'YouTube Red' Subscription Plan to Launch With Ad-Free Video, Offline Viewing

posted on by Karen Ressler

YouTube announced on Wednesday that it will launch a paid subscription plan called "YouTube Red" on October 28. The plan will cost US$9.99 per month for ad-free video, as well as the ability to save videos to watch offline.

Members will also have access to exclusive web shows starting in early 2016. YouTube posted a list of planned shows, including projects by PewDiePie, Rooster Teeth, The Game Theorists' MatPat, Wong Fu Productions, and CollegeHumor.

YouTube also announced an upcoming YouTube Music app that allows users to choose a song and allow similar songs to play. The YouTube Red membership plan works on the YouTube Music, YouTube Gaming, and YouTube Kids apps. The membership also applies to Google Play Music.

The Wall Street Journal reported last October that YouTube executives were considering a paid subscription plan.
