Sony Sells Over 40 Million PlayStation 4s Worldwide

posted on by Egan Loo

The recently restructured Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced that it has sold over 40 million PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide as of Sunday, May 22. Sony specified that these are actual sell-through numbers, as opposed to units shipped. It also announced that the actual sales of PlayStation 4 software titles, include packaged retail units and PlayStation Store downloads, topped 270.9 million units as of Sunday, May 22.

SIE noted that the PlayStation 4 has garnered the fastest sales of any console under the PlayStation brand.

Sony had announced in January that the console's total number of units sold worldwide reached 35.9 million after the holiday season. It added that it sold 8.4 million PlayStation 4 units during that quarter, which lasted from October 1 to December 31.

The PlayStation 4 console first launched in the U.S. and Canada in November 2013 and in Japan in February 2014. Sony sold 7.5 million PS4 units in fiscal year 2013, 14.8 million units in fiscal year 2014, 3 million units in the first quarter of fiscal year 2015, and 4 million units in the second quarter of fiscal year 2015. The system is now available in 124 countries and territories.
