Sony to 'Aggressively' Enter Mobile Games Market, Cites Pokémon Go's Success

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai told the Financial Times newspaper on Sunday that it is "aggressively getting into" mobile gaming, citing the success of Niantic Labs' Pokémon Go game.

Sony launched its ForwardWorks Corporation in March, which will make apps for mobile devices and smartphones based on PlayStation games and characters.

Nintendo launched its first smartphone game, Miitomo, in March and the app has reached more than 10 million users worldwide.

Nintendo plans to launch approximately five smart device titles by the end of March 2017, including apps based on the Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing franchises.

While Nintendo did not directly develop the Pokémon Go game, the company, alongside Google and The Pokémon Company, invested a total of US$20 million in the game's developer Niantic Labs. Nintendo delayed the July release of its "Pokémon Go Plus" accessory to manufacture more units.
