No Manga Nominated For Inaugural Ringo Awards

posted on by Karen Ressler

The 2017 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards, or "Ringo Awards," announced the nominees for its inaugural awards on Wednesday. The list of nominations does not include any Japanese manga.

The awards are named for late comic artist Michael Lance Wieringo. The categories include Best Cartoonist, Writer, Artist or Penciller, Inker, Letterer, Colorist, Cover Artist, Series, Original Graphic Novel, Anthology, Humor Comic, Comic Strip or Panel, Webcomic, Non-fiction Comic Work, and Presentation in Design.

Nominations were open to everyone but voting on the final ballot is restricted to creative comic book industry professionals. The awards ceremony will be held at Baltimore Comic-Con on September 23.

Baltimore Comic-Con previously hosted the Harvey Awards, which were reportedly leaving Baltimore Comic-Con after partnering with ReedPOP, but the Harvey Awards official website is now no longer active. Unlike the Ringo Awards, nominations for the Harvey Awards were only open to industry professionals. The Harvey Awards also had a category for "Best American Edition of Foreign Material;" ONE and Yūsuke Murata's One-Punch Man and Shigeru Mizuki's Showa: A History of Japan (1953-1989) were nominated last year.
